Sympathy for the Devil…

Success carries within it the very seeds of destruction and Gordon Brown should, if he is as well read and intellectually as bright as his Mother thought him to be an opinion the press echoed, know that he is presiding over the meltdown of the Labour Party in England with only a rump being left in Scotland and Wales. The reasons for this may seem very complex to a Labour paid “Spin Doctor” and advisor but perhaps it has less to do with political imperatives and more to do with the tide and times in which we live, if you like – the political temperature.

After a decade and despite billions of taxpayers money being thrown at ‘problems’, none of it has worked properly and in between, the Government has allowed itself to get mired in inconsequential legislation such as Fox Hunting, ID Cards and Equality Legislation none of which are significant deliverers of any value to society at large. What is significant about 10 years of Labour is the destruction of Private Pension provision, cheap jack accountancy tricks such as the PPFI , lies and political spin and ultimately in the outcome, the greatest social division expressed in terms of education and housing since probably the Victorian Age. This is some amazing track record, more Laurel and Hardy than Kier Hardy but also the proof of the saying that “The Road to Hell is paved…”

A Stubborn Man – Big Office, Little Man

Gordon Brown has already demonstrated that he is a stubborn man who is,”Not for Turning” but in all of this, perhaps he is indicating just how by very nature, the desire to ‘govern’ and the actual ability to do so, can vary wildly. Language can be confusing but being ‘determined’ in the pursuit of a specific goal or dream, is very different from being stubborn and unable to let go of an idea or concept that is no longer valid. I have no doubt that Brown within his own personal limitations is a totally genuine man and in this context have no desire to ‘attack him’ personally but for all that unfortunately events have overtaken him and a far wiser man by now, would have decided that it is time to, “spend more time with my family”.

If you look at Gordon Brown’s In tray, it is not very appetizing for him, the West Lothian question, The EU Constitution, the Trade Unions stirring bringing major problems within the year, house price inflation followed by a probable price decline, massive Government debt, a slowing World Economy, rising Oil Prices, Immigration and so on. Whilst some of this is outside of his control, much of it can and will, be directly pointed at him as the former Chancellor and therein lies the problem for most Labour MPs and supporters, when he falls, so do they. However the fact that 25% ‘know’ that they will lose their seats at the next election, will not encourage them to be “brave” and rebel against the Government, why hasten the inevitable, why not cling on until the last possible moment ?

On The Road to Hell

As all political careers end in failure and all post war changes of the party in Government came about by the incumbents “losing” rather than the opposition “winning”, even if a snap Autumn election had been won by Labour, the party would decline long before another 5 years were up. I doubt the Parliament would have lasted for even half of that time because the “Time” for the Labour Party to be the Government is now well and truly over. In many ways, Gordon Brown waited far too long for his “moment as PM”, it is not just him and any personal flaws that he may have, it is the tide in the affairs of men that has done for him. Although it may seem trivial to some, the probability is that the electorate generally are just ‘bored’ with Labour and want a change so whether Tony or Gordon, the result would be the same in the end – bye, bye Labour, old or new.
