Milly the Muppet
Apparently our much loved Foreign Secretary is to give a speech in which he will say that it is our moral duty to spread democracy abroad even by military means, if necessary. It makes you realise that the lunatics have indeed taken over running the asylum when a man who has denied the British electorate their promised referendum on the EU Constitution and therefore denies democracy at home, has the gall to say this ! The man is a total idiot, how can he face himself in the mirror each day to shave without cutting his own throat ?
The proposition anyway is totally wrong headed and the lesson of Iraq needs to be learned both here in the UK and, in the USA – Democracy is not a product that you can export or impose. We only need to look at our own histories to see how our democracy came about with blood spilt in civil wars and institutions evolving over time in a never ending process.
What Is Democracy ?
It is not like a fitted kitchen where a builder will turn up next week to do the job, democracy is not a “thing” it is a plant that can only be grown on fertile soil and nurtured daily by people who care about it passionately and are prepared to die for it as a principle. It is irrelevant what the particular policies are of the government of the day, policy is not democracy, it is enshrined in the Institutions, precedents and procedures that support it but most of all, it burns like a flame in the heart of all men and women of the country.
To paraphrase Napoleon when talking of his Guard and each carrying a Marshall’s Baton in his knapsack, each citizen must carry the torch of democracy within their very souls. If this sounds romantic when we consider a Government that got less than 22% of the potential popular vote at the last election because the citizens did not turn out to vote in 2005, I would agree to a point because all democracies “go to sleep” from time to time. For a decade now, we have been ruled by ignorant men and women who too easily have vandalised the very institutions on which our democracy rests but, they will be held to account sooner rather than later.
Moribund Milly
Milliband like the Archbishop the other day, will come to regret this speech. Having read all 8 pages of what Rowan-Williams said, none of which advocated a parallel system of Law, quite apart from academics making poor leaders, it is obvious that it was his unwise words in a BBC Radio 4 interview that “did for him”. Whatever the Archbishop’s intent and I’m sure it was good, it is likely that his tenure in Office may not be long lived and the “Lambeth Conference” may well see the inevitable process start.
Milliband projects himself as an arrogant, self opinionated person who would indeed be foolish enough to say “Let them eat cake” and although this may not be the truth, in the end, in the world of ‘leadership’ and especially politics, it is the impression that counts. A Foreign Secretary that speaks of exporting democracy and all that implies whilst not allowing democracy to prevail as promised on the EU, is a laughing stock.
Finally and as ever “reality bites” in the shape of Iraq. The basic principle behind the concept of democracy just like the Rule of Law and one law for all (Rowan-Williams), is that “I a Shia or a Sunni or a Kurd, will die for you my fellow countryman whether you are Shia, Sunni or Kurd so that equality rules for us all and together, we build our country.” I think the phrase “In your dreams” comes to mind here when contemplating what is a tribal society where are the educated Iraqis long since decamped to the pavement cafés of the Edgware Road and other exotic locations.
The Basis is British Vital Interests
British Foreign Policy should be predicated on one thing and loudly trumpeted to the world at large; “British vital interests”. As an example: If Saudi Arabia shut off the oil because the “Riyadh Rebels” had taken over and deposed the current government, would/should Britain invade or be part of an invasion force ? The answer must be an obvious YES, not because we want to steal their oil, that must be paid for at market prices and made available to the Saudi Treasury but, continuance of supplies is vital for the global economy which is vital for the UK as a global trading economy.
Enough of this meaningless grandiose talk about “moral rights” – just how Victorian and Empire can you get ? The world, both friends and enemies would best appreciate us being straight talking about our intent and therefore, knowledgeable about what constitutes our “tripwires” in terms of the consequences of their actions where they impede upon us. Milliband is clearly not fit to be a party leader and not even fit in a hopeless Communist Government run by the Scottish Mafia, to be Foreign Secretary – He is a total Muppet !
