What Advice Would I Give Gordon Brown ?

The Daily Telegraph has a comment feature called “Speakers Corner” which is one suspects, a reasonably unmoderated section, to a large extent. They pose questions and people mail in often, very vociferously !

One of the ones today was: “What advice would you give Gordon Brown?” and what a hoot were quite a number of the responses ! I of course being of a sober and subtle disposition was quite restrained in my suggestions:

RETIRE ON THE GROUNDS OF ILL HEALTH, do not just “hang on in there”, walk away now with your personal dignity intact. Politics is a funny business and consider the following: I am by nature a Tory however during Maggie’s first term, I just couldn’t imagine her being re-elected, she was lacklustre but then… along came 3 idiots in Argentina and the Falklands War.

You are a Prime Minister who’s reputation rests on a 10 year track record as the “Iron Chancellor” at a time when the whole cheap money deal today is trashing the global economy. Being a “war hero” is not a choice because the UK is already fighting 2 wars neither of which you financed properly in the first place as Chancellor. You could be a “peace hero” by refusing to continue deploying British troops abroad but, our force ‘presence’ – 4,000 in Iraq, 8,000 in Afghanistan is so small, would its absence really be noticed by the US who are taking the lions share of the burden and managed a 30,000 infantry “troop surge” on top of the +120,000 already there ?

You could have been a “UK Patriot Hero” over the EU Constitution but, you flunked that one too and rather badly at that. Were the EU holding your wife and children hostage during the ‘signing’ is the only question that comes to mind as an excuse for your truly monumental poor performance over that one.

Having lost out on taking credit for a great “Home Economy” and both War and/or Peace Hero not being on the “table”, plus having sold all UK citizens into perpetual bondage to Brussels, the only possible advice is for you to retire, let’s be honest, you are buggered and the Labour Party may well end up, only slightly ahead on seats come the next Election to the Liberals so for them, they too are buggered and the longer you hang on, the more they will be totally buggered.

That the Labour Party is going to lose the next election is a certainty, the only question that remains is just how damaged the party will be as a consequence. If the Labour Party accepted that reality they would elect someone like Frank Field or Kate Hoey as The Leader so that they could start building a recovery platform whilst Labour was still in power. Why those two Gordon ? Simple, both are names the public will recognize, neither of them are tainted by being responsible for these past 11 years and as you have found out to your personal cost, it doesn’t matter what your job title was, you are as a key member of Blair’s Cabinet and as a consequence, you had no room for manoeuvre, no chance to be your own man.

RESIGN NOW TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH THE FAMILY.
