David Cameron’s Strategy on the EU – Should Be !
There are people within the UK and indeed, they have their equivalents in many EU member states, who hate the EU with some considerable vehemence, I am not one of them. The Conservative Party is reluctant to grasp an issue which has seen them torn asunder in the past but however much David Cameron wants to avoid “Banging on about Europe”, the topic will just not go away and he needs to grasp the nettle.
However, if he is smart, there is a way of dealing with the subject which would be far less “toxic” in all respects and confirm his credentials as the “Prime Minister in waiting.”
The Right Strategy
I still do not understand why Gordon Brown and Milliband behaved as they did over this EU Constitution/Lisbon Treaty, it was foolish beyond belief even in the best of political times for the Labour Party but now that they are frequently referred to as the “ZanuLabour Party” after Robert Mugabe… so, no leadership there then either ! Were their families being held hostage by Stasi trained assassins ?
They have offered the British Public no explanation at all for not delivering on the promised referendum on which they got elected and this, rather than which way people might vote in such a referendum, is the real problem which Cameron needs to side step but also deal with.
Simple Solution that even Osborne (Mr Thick & Complacent Twat), Might Comprehend…
The solution is simple, the Labour backbenches will ensure that the UK Parliament ratifies this “Treaty” if only because a few might fancy being MEPs and get on the Brussels gravy train once they are thrown out of Westminster. Brown like Major before him, will run this Parliament right up to the very last minute, May 2010.
It therefore follows that the “horse will have bolted” by the time Cameron moves into Downing Street. What he now needs to do is to start outline negotiations with Brussels on the terms of a “Trade Only” relationship between the UK and the EU. His commitment should then be that a Conservative Government would present the 2 options “Continue As Is” or “Opt Out” to the British public in a referendum that is binding upon Parliament.
Beyond this, whilst he may say that as Prime Minister, he would make a personal recommendation, no public funds would be allocated to supporting and promoting either option, the government would just make available all the information it has and after a suitable time period, the referendum would be held and the electorate bindingly will decide.
Why Would He ?
Cynically it is what is known as a “win/win” situation. “Good Old Gordon” has already signed up to this EU crap and, within the 2 years to the next election, we can guarantee that his “Red Lines” like everything else he has ever done, will unravel before the eyes of the electorate – Goose – cooked just how much but, he will clingon – Kligon in ‘Star Trek’ vogue.
David Cameron doesn’t have to do any of this but, he really does if he wants “One Nation” politics. A lot of people and political commentators like Simon Heffer, will continue to try and undermine Cameron because he is following a sensible medium term campaign and they, want ‘public revenge’ on the socialists through election losing statements. But anti-Europe and tax cuts will just alienate the electors, it must be, “as the circumstances permit…” however and all that said, other opportunities beckon.
Last year at the Tory Party Conference and as Brown “savoured and dithered”, Cameron made a great speech which coupled with Osborne’s tax thing on IHT, was sufficient to take off the wheels of Brown’s government and his election prospects. Frankly if Brown had called that election, he may have reduced his majority but in the process, increased his ‘authority’ within the Labour Party and ‘expunged Blair’ but, he was too weak and ultimately, gutless which is what the electorate saw, Gordon is now a real lame duck PM. but more than that, the Labour Party also is totally lame and knows its time is up.
If the Tories are to offer ‘more’ than NuLab, it must lie in the area of ‘de-centralization’ and devolving various aspects of ‘government’ to the electorate of which, devolving the decision on the EU relationship is a classic no cost, win both ways ‘thing’. “We may ‘advise’ but the decision is yours…”
Going a Lot Further…
‘Dave’ would rather ignore the inequalities with regard to devolution in the interests of ‘preserving the Union’ – nice sentiment but a total losers agenda, he needs to move on from that and tackle it all ‘head on’ and as the voters expect if he wants to protect the Union.
The ‘Devolution’ issue was totally botched by Labour and, even they know that now, their dreams of permanent and total power for ever in Scotland and Wales, has turned into a proper power base for the local nationalist parties at the expense of Labour. A Scottish PM representing a Scottish Seat as an MP at Westminster, should be in a unique position to argue “For the Union” but all we get is the usual sulky silence from this myopic son of the manse… or should that read Soab ?
Cameron now needs to embrace and deepen “devolution”. Yes, the way the SNP is using its income as the Scottish Parliament from Central Government funding, is totally evil and although originally designed and conceived for Labour’s benefit only, having fallen into the hands of the SNP- the enemy, is proving to be a highly effective at manipulating this very tool rather than complying with the wishes and needs of the Scottish people so, call their bluff !
Devise an “appropriate formula” that would apply to Slough, Sheffield, Stirling, Swansea and based upon population, services and their needs, the “Barnett Formula” as applies to Scotland only, is dead and buried, the needs of the citizens are constant wherever they live and a transparent formula must apply. If the formula is insufficient to deliver the outcome required, then each local unit, should have the power to raise extra revenue via local taxation for which they are accountable to …. Pinky & Perky plus “Sweep”ie. their electorate. The SNP has gained traction in Scotland simply because of the total cowardice of the Labour Party, time they were gone and high time for a different approach.
