Media Froth Over Milliband
The problem with all the media froth surrounding David Milliband’s possible throwing of his hat into the ring to start a Leadership contest is total crap. The reality is that Brown will be the last man standing as the ship goes down in 2010. If Milliband is actually trying to launch a Leadership challenge to Brown at this time, all he is demonstrating is that he is nuts and unfit for High Office.
But if he was going to and had any guts at all, he would have put his cards on the table and said outright; “I want to launch a Leadership challenge”. No, being a total wimp he has to speak in code through the side of his mouth, that is no Leader and clearly not a decent No.2 either, he’s a snake and all the other “girlish toads” twittering in the background like his brother, Alexander, Purnell , Burnham, Johnson, Clarke, Blunket, Harmon and the like, can take a hike, none of them have got the bottle or the sense God gave them either.
Pakistan Is a Threat to the UK…
Pakistan is a far greater threat to the UK directly than any single other Muslim country simply because probably the majority of the UK Muslim population, originate from there. However, I would hesitate to claim that the majority of Pakistani citizens or British citizens of Pakistani origins are any threat in terms of jihad, though a small number may be.
In the UK, those that are a threat are young men who want to “be heroes” and impressionable young men such as these are easily manipulated. However, the situation in Pakistan is very different as people there, rather like Palestinians living in Gaza, will inevitably get caught up in local events, blame the US, Britain rather than accept responsibility for their own actions.
All in Denial…
In a sense, I’m now totally bored with the “Gordon Brown’s Leadership Under Threat…” scenario because I don’t really believe it because they have no one to replace him, if they did an election would have to be called and the Labour Party is broke anyway and can’t afford to fight a General Election.
What is quite funny though are the journalists trying to flog some life into a dead donkey of a story. First on Sunday there was Mary Riddell a left wing liberal who might be an acquaintance of Brown writing about Gordon ‘sticking to his guns’ and then on Monday Janet Daley who is a rather boring right wing writer, going on about, “The Tories had better watch out…” I thought the full moon had passed !
So I Got that One Wrong…
My expectation was that Labour would hold Glasgow East with a vastly reduced majority and I guess with a margin of only 354 votes on just over 26,219 cast (42.25%)to give the SNP victory, I could have been right but wasn’t.
I suppose the interesting question will be whether the SNP will hold the seat in 2010 ? That this seat was lost by Labour on a 22% swing plus a lower turnout to the SNP, is a classic “protest vote” in many ways because the Scots Nats were the second party in the seat with the Tories and Liberals way behind and therefore not suitable protest recipients as it were. But will the SNP retain it ?
Barak Obama Sorry but I am Not a Believer…
I must confess that when it comes to the next President of the United States, I have not been ‘inspired’ for some time by which I mean a number of Presidential Races, with the choices on offer from any particular side. Although History will judge the present incumbent far more kindly than the media does, we have not had a really striking President since Ronald Reagan.
Cock Up not Conspiracy…
In today’s Telegraph was an article by Irwin Stelzer an American economist, writer and for a long time, a “Gordon Brown Groupie” well at least until Gordon was shown to be a lot less clever and competent than people previously had imagined.
The thrust of his article concerned the abandonment of Chancellor Brown’s famous “Gold Rules” that governed Government expenditure over the length of the economic cycle. Stelzer’s argument being that it doesn’t matter because the whole purpose of the “Rules” when announced were merely to assuage fears in the City of yet another Loony Labour Government… Hmm…
The Times they are a’Changing… Do Keep Up
Yesterday a chap called Shane Firth wrote a blog on the Daily Telegraph web site that essentially was a “push Cameron to the Right” in terms of making this promise or that concerning the run up to the next General Election. Now whilst the things the author wants, I do not fundamentally disagree with, it amazes me that these types of people have learned so little from 11 years of Labour rule or, misrule.
It really doesn’t matter what your particular political view happens to be, hard Right, hard Left or somewhere in the middle, the reality is that the “We are Telling You” attitude of Labour as emphasised by Harmon and Blears and this Rump Parliament has run its course and has only led to failure and social fragmentation.
It therefore follows that hard right commentators wanting Cameron to espouse “cuts in taxation plus job losses” in the public sector, want to behave no better or wiser than the Class of ’97. What they want as those Labour MPs wanted then, is not just ‘victory’ but the chance to rub the noses of their opponents in the mud and grind them into the dust. It all amounts to the ‘failed yesterday people’, the political world and the electorate have long ago moved on.
Being Honest With The Electorate…
As a regular reader of the Daily Telegraph Comments section and the on-line feedback from the readership, it is interesting to see how the Right of Centre and more Extreme Right Tories line up on the subject of David Cameron. The former understand and support his strategy, the latter led by idiots such as Simon Heffer, hate him and want a “bold costs/tax reduction program” spelt out before the next General Election which is a sure fire recipe for disaster.
The hard facts are by now understood by all and of all political persuasion, the public finances are in a dreadful mess with massive overspends on all major budgets and tax revenues falling in the face of an economic slowdown.
Reform of The House of Lords – Straw Again
Once again, Jack Straw prattling on about reforming the Lords is about as useful an exercise as rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. Apart from simple spite, the Labour party believes that in reforming things, they are creating a “modern state” and all that malarkey. The problem is as events have shown so often in these past 11 years. “modern Labour” just equals the “current corruption” as it always has over the centuries.
The reality is that all constitutions wherever they come from and by whoever drafted are and should be, designed to restrain the natural propensity of human beings to become corrupted by power.
The Media is the Message…
There is the old saying that when you are in a hole, do stop digging ! I was reminded of this by a BBC employee called Nick Robinson who having filed a story that basically derided David Davis and his motives for resigning and causing a by-election in which he stood for his own seat on the issue of the 42 Day Detention without Charge legislation.
As Robinson is a habitué of the Westminster Village and deeply enmeshed within it all, I am sure that he might well have some insight into whether or not DD is an egotistical fool or whatever but he along with all the other hacks, have spent far too long at the Bar of the Commons methinks.
