The Media is the Message…

There is the old saying that when you are in a hole, do stop digging ! I was reminded of this by a BBC employee called Nick Robinson who having filed a story that basically derided David Davis and his motives for resigning and causing a by-election in which he stood for his own seat on the issue of the 42 Day Detention without Charge legislation.

As Robinson is a habitué of the Westminster Village and deeply enmeshed within it all, I am sure that he might well have some insight into whether or not DD is an egotistical fool or whatever but he along with all the other hacks, have spent far too long at the Bar of the Commons methinks.

A Big Mistake

Sometimes people just can’t see the wood for the trees and in this case and despite the impact that all the sleaze, double talk and MPs expenses has had on the general public, was seriously underestimated. The whole issue of 42 Days, ID Cards and so on does not register as that high on the agenda to people worrying about rising, food, fuel and housing costs but sometimes if we step aside from the “grand issues”, something small can make a difference.

Although only my opinion and therefore no more valid than yours, I suspect that the way the 42 Day vote was swung through deals done behind closed doors and reliant on the 9 DUP votes – so what were they promised ? Against a background smell of dirty deeds and possible corruption, an MP who stood up and threw it all away, the Front bench job, possibly his seat, had a far greater impact right across the political spectrum and gave people a “jolt” that they liked.

The media just haven’t twigged it and are still stuck in a “denial mode”, even the cartoon in today’s Telegraph is about a “David Davis Ego Trip” and perhaps that is a shame because being so close to the “pulse of Westminster” (if it has one), has made them like the politicians, totally disengaged from the electorate.

David Davis

Yes he is a “Big Political Beast” and is possibly vain and so on but all that said, even if it was mistakenly, he has taken a very good step and an interesting thought that someone suggested yesterday on a BBC comments board, he would make a good Speaker of the House – excellent. There is an attempt to portray him as some “Danger to Cameron” but he is not although he could have been if he had remained tucked up on the Shadow Front Bench but no more. The Tories can be content that they chose the right Leader and David Davis can be content that his political career has taken an interesting and positive turn.

Nick Robinson and an Even Bigger Mistake

Nick Robinson like the vast majority of the media jobsworths we have in this country, decided to attack and deride his actions prior to checking out just how the public might feel about David Davis. It was Nick Robinson that Gordon Brown, knowing that he was a soft touch who wouldn’t ask tough questions, told that he wasn’t going to call a Election last Autumn in an “exclusive interview” something that in the end, did neither of them much good.

But coming back to DD, having got it wrong, Robinson couldn’t resist returning to the story. For an example and exercise in total stupidity and arrogance, the following is a very good link to follow:

I couldn’t resist posting to the BBC Robinson Blog:

“Dear Nick,

John Wayne said “Never aplogise…”, he might have added, “Move on and do not re-visit past failures”

You were totally silly to write this blog, move on, you are only pointing out your own failings as a journalist which has the faintest whiff of an “ego thing”. People like you have to come to a decision concerning how you want to be seen, a “man of principle” like David Davis who will throw the dice or, a jobbing journalist getting paid a salary.

Your view of Davis seen through the prism of the media Zeitgeist was no different from any other “media hack” because the story lacked the black and white drama that sells papers and advertising unlike “Nazi Sex Party…Mosley, FF1″ de dah…

Best advice, move on and forget it, bringing it up again merely makes us question whether you are worth a fart reading/listening to in the first place and, having sown the seeds of doubt yourself… don’t bitch sunshine.”

Then again, perhaps David Davis is far smarter and deliberate than we all realise because he has “slipped the leash” of the media classes completely and thrown most other MPs into total confusion.
