Cock Up not Conspiracy…
In today’s Telegraph was an article by Irwin Stelzer an American economist, writer and for a long time, a “Gordon Brown Groupie” well at least until Gordon was shown to be a lot less clever and competent than people previously had imagined.
The thrust of his article concerned the abandonment of Chancellor Brown’s famous “Gold Rules” that governed Government expenditure over the length of the economic cycle. Stelzer’s argument being that it doesn’t matter because the whole purpose of the “Rules” when announced were merely to assuage fears in the City of yet another Loony Labour Government… Hmm…
The Reality of the Golden Rules
Was always bollocks and for those interested enough to follow such arcane matters, Brown has been lying and redrawing the stop start dates for this mythical economic cycle for years so frankly formally burying them will hardly cause a ripple politically. Back in the 1980s in London, there was a businessman I knew who was into developing “themed restaurants” – American, Tex-Mex, Salsa, Tapas etc.etc. His comment was that in most cases, the particular theme was more important to the owners of the restaurant than the customers who just wanted a fun place to enjoy a night out.
By the same token, the taxpayers come electorate couldn’t give a rats arse for Golden Rules, Silver Linings, Copper Plated this or that, all they care about is “having a good time” and being able to meet their bills and feel that they can reach their personal goals.
Gordon’s Cooked Goose
Frankly the public probably couldn’t care too much which Party formed the Government next time round except it won’t be Labour, like a cheating spouse, they won’t be trusted again or at least, for 12-18 years. It really wouldn’t matter what Brown or any front bench spokesperson stood up and said, nobody is listening to them any more, the Labour Party is toast and all the majority of the public are waiting for is for them to go because the party is well and truly over.
I am certain that Labour will retain the Glasgow East seat in the by-election albeit with a reduced majority on a low turnout but whilst the media want to whip this up into some important “make or break” time for Gordon Brown and his leadership, the British electorate know that is a load of twaddle, win lose or draw there will be no impact on Gordon Brown, he has already been written off.
There will not be a Leadership challenge to Brown this side of the next General Election because the Labour Party doesn’t have an alternative to offer, they have no talent available, the Blair Brown feud stunted career development within Labour. They can’t afford to fight a General Election, the Labour Party is virtually bankrupt and if they changed Leader a third time during this Parliament, the pressure to call an election there and then would be unstoppable.
Irwin Stelzer as writer
I was not sure what the writer was trying to communicate in his article. Was he trying too justify his previous approval of Brown but, giving himself some “distance” from the detritus that the Brown of today has become ? Of course he is right in the sense that politicians claiming that they adhere to some “system” are as deluded as the many punters that arrive in Las Vegas with some system that will enable them to break the bank and become very rich overnight – total bollocks ! What politicians say means nothing because the politicians are never in control of events, all they can do indeed and always manage to do, is to take some action that makes things far worse.
It is Always a Cock-Up
Fortunately rather than relying on politicians and baboon bottomed dumb economists, we can always hold on firmly to the “Law of Unintended Consequences” which inevitably comes to our rescue. Consider John Major and the ERM fiasco that devalued the £, lost the Tories their reputation for “being good with the economy” but also set the economic stage for many years of growth until Brown ploughed it all into the ground through massive overspend, high taxation and general incompetence.
However Gordon like any political hack is today just fulfilling his destiny. His inflation lies apart, we all know that it has been running at 8-10% for some years now so the combination of wage demands and devaluation of the £ means that Brown has destroyed the Labour Party, made it more attractive for many EU citizens to return home and so on. Inflation will take off publicly so combined with wage inflation and falling house prices, the UK economy will once again reach equilibrium and a sense of “fairness” within about 5 years. It should then chug along quite happily for a decade until another stupid politician screws up again.
I’m waiting for the day we get some total twat of a Chancellor who claims that he will steer the “Ship of State” using seaweed and pine cones – Golden, of course !
