Manipulating the Media – Labour Spins Again

im-hp.jpg

It is called the “silly season” because it is the Summer Holiday period; people are away relaxing and enjoying themselves so that they are less interested in “political dramas” and more into “Man Bites Dog” type stories. However, the political journalists still have to earn a crust and the backroom Spin Machine of the Labour Party is only too willing to use them for their own advantage.

The ongoing “Miliband Mounts Leadership Challenge” stories seem to me to be part of a complicated scheme to try and minimise the damage to the Labour Party at the 2010 General Election. Although not publicly admitted, the upper echelons of the Labour Party accept that they will lose, the question is, just how heavily and can they mitigate it in anyway ? The prize is no longer winning a 4th Term, a Hung Parliament would be a “Dream Result” for Labour, coming 3rd behind the LibDems, a true disaster for them.

The Survival Plan

The operation is quite professional and slick to be fair, very Alistair Campbell. The first thing they want is “credibility” so picking on some favourite suck bum reporter that fawns on Labour is worthless, you need to seduce a supposed “opponent” which in this case is Janet Daley who writes regularly for the Telegraph. The “How” is simple, flattery, “We value your professionalism…would appreciate your input…in return share our thoughts with you…” Easy peasy stuff !

The aim is to ensure that the Labour Party as opposed to the Government, is still seen as a viable and interesting force, stays in the headlines plus, people are distracted from seeing how impotent the Government has become because of its past mistakes and profligacy with the Public Purse. If in addition you can spread a little “alarm and despondency amongst the Tory ranks, which is a bonus.

My Telegraph Entry

Today she wrote the third article based around “David Miliband being a real threat and Challenge for Cameron” the following was my response:

“Good grief Janet, please do remind us what you do for a living ?

It was clear from your last main article where “selected journalists were invited to a Labour…” that you were being duped and just couldn’t see it so allow me to spell it out for you. The big clue is “No publicity is bad publicity, just spell my name right !”

Will Miliband seriously challenge Brown – answer NO, well at least not until after the 2010 election when Brown will have been defeated. So what is the purpose of all this froth ? To keep the Tories out of the spotlight and get the party members to focus on a potentially resurgent Labour Party ahead of the Party Conference because the party activists “out on the doorsteps” are the most crucial factor in reducing the scale of the upcoming election defeat.

In simple terms this is a “positioning exercise” to lay the foundations to rebuild the “Labour Brand” as quickly as possible post May 2010, you can bet that some pretty heavy attention has been paid to what happened to the Tories post 1997 and lessons learned. You must not overlook either that the main threat to Labour comes from the LibDems because they will be able to take seats from Labour where the Tories can’t as in the Labour heartlands.

The LibDem Threat to Labour

People who have always previously voted Labour will find it hard if not impossible to vote Tory but will vote Plyd, SNP or LibDem. It is because of this that Nick Clegg has already announced that he will concentrate on Labour seats at the next election because tactically, 2010 could be the big breakthrough for them to make it back to the top tier and the possibility of forming a future Government by switching places with Labour.

The real threat then is not just that the Tories will form the next Government but that the LibDems will gain more seats than Labour and therefore become the “Official Opposition” which could quickly reduce the Labour Party to virtual oblivion within perhaps just two Parliaments. In fact if this happens, Labour will go very hard left and become virtually Communist.

Your last two paragraphs are just bonkers and should read “The Labour Party would like to flush out all the Tory plans so that they can steal them…” I don’t think Cameron is that daft and the suggestion that the Labour Spin Machine has sold you of “great Labour minds pooling great new policies and plans…” is just pots. If these morons had any new ideas that would swing the electorate behind them, they would not talk about it, they would implement them whilst they hold a majority in the House.

It does get a lot more detailed than this but ‘Dave’ and his Merry Men would be best advised to keep details under lock and key until the after the State Opening of Parliament in late 2009 when Labour will have sealed its fate. As for the rest Janet, do get someone to see you safely across the road, don’t attempt it by yourself.”

A Little Later

I noticed a news story on the Front Page concerning Gordon Brown being advised by people close to him to cancel his trip to the Olympics in China because of fear of people making a move on his Leadership whilst he was away. If it was April Fool’s Day, it couldn’t get any better but I personally feel that they are rather “over doing it all”, if they are not careful it could quickly degenerate into a Whitehall Farce. I couldn’t resist another DT entry:

“I just love the “Gordon advised not to go to China because of plot to oust him”. Totally brilliant, the UK has finally made it to Banana Republic status, what next, Tanks on Parliament Green ?

I must admit it is not only funny but the thought of “Tony’s Spin Team” being bought out of retirement, their quills creaking and mobile phone batteries flat, just to save the Labour Party is hilarious.

I can vaguely remember a film called “Wag the Dog” where a team are bought in to save an American President from scandal by starting a phoney war with a non-existent country. Oh so New Labour, oh so Blair and his creepy tribe.

So you are going to unseat Gordon ? Lord these buggers are really desperate as well as pathetic. Gordon Brown and Labour must be a Star Trek fans – well, they do like to Klingon boom, boom !”
