The Post Conference Detritus
When what you are doing works, keep doing it, if it doesn’t work then do something else which all sounds simple because it is unfortunately there is another factor as well. Sometimes, perhaps you have passed the tipping point, it doesn’t matter what you do, it all goes horribly wrong – always and I’m afraid that is where Labour is now at.
The total cock up of Ruth Kelly resigning to spend more time with her family is a case in point. Just how did that get leaked in the way that it did ? How can your news management be so bad if as the official story goes, this was agreed between her and Brown some months ago ?
Whatever and although not a special speech by normal standards, Brown’s was amazing by his low level of achievement to date and it got wiped off the front pages, when you’re hot, you’re hot and when you are not, you really are NOT !
The Mary Riddell Fan Club
The Telegraph insists on employing this left wing journalist called Mary Riddell who is hilariously deluded about Labour’s prospects for Gordon Brown at the next General Election. She just still doesn’t ‘get it’ her article was all wasted words and self delusion because the simple fact is that it is all over for the Labour Party, they stopped listening to the public some time ago when Blair was still Prime Minister and now they are reaping their harvest, nobody is listening to them.
As I’ve written before, the whole Cabinet could be speaking Swahili on TV and in the House, the Media would notice but the public wouldn’t for a moment. It is no longer just Brown it is also now the Labour Party which is detested and it has a major talent deficit because there are no serious contenders to replace Brown as people imagining David Miliband is a serious Leadership candidate testifies.
How can a man with the arrogance of Portillo before his election defeat and the looks of Rowan Atkinson be taken seriously ? Michael Portillo learned humility and became a better person, Rowan Atkinson is incredibly talented, Miliband is the kid that always got bullied at school – he’s got a “slap me face”. In simple terms Labour politicians are just not likeable – Harmon, Blears, Straw, Hoon… none of them would you want in your family or living next door to you, if the Tories became the “nasty party” back in 1997, Labour today is the “toxic party”.
Gordon Brown is Barking…
When it comes to Brown, even if he were your brother or husband, you have to accept that he is the wrong man, in the wrong place at the wrong time and is unqualified for the role. His claims that only Gordon is “experienced and qualified enough” to take us through these turbulent times, are totally risible and taking the public for total fools which is not very clever.
People down the Dog & Duck neither know nor care about what all the technicalities are behind the financial crisis but Brown taking credit for the “good times” and trying to deflect all the blame on US Sub Prime for these “bad times”, just doesn’t wash with the majority of people. It is rather like the Fortune Teller who didn’t see the bus coming that ran them over, someone not very good at their job and someone who is increasingly desperate.
David Cameron and the Conservatives
Economically we are where we are and it makes not a ‘ha’penny worth of difference who is PM and from what Party they come, the problems to be solved are the same. So from this, what exactly can we expect David Cameron to do that Gordon Brown can’t ?
The answer is fairly simple, Cameron’s hands are clean of the blame, Brown’s aren’t. It is worse than that because Brown cannot and will not admit he made mistakes, he is tied into his own ‘narrative’ of being a great and prudent Chancellor like a sailor lashed to the mast of a ship heading for the rocks, he has become his own prisoner.
If you think about your life experiences, you know that it is easy to be objective about the lives of your friends and give then sound advice on what they should do because you are not them. Try sorting your own problems out though and…
Cameron can be flexible and think freely about the route ahead because he doesn’t have to defend a failed policy decision from 2, 4 or 6 years ago. Because he is “innocent” of causing the problem, providing the reasons are properly explained to them, the public will accept a stringent “austerity package” from him to put things right whereas they never would from Brown who will carry the blame for the mess we are in..
