My opposition to ID cards IS based upon civil liberties (no matter how much I hate those two words together).

As far as I am concerned, sovereignty lies with the individual; it is lent to Government in order for them to protect us, and nothing else. ID cards are nothing to do with security, for they will change nothing. They are nothing but an exercise in arbitrary power by the state.

It is about time that the relationship between the individual and the state was re-examined and re-balanced. Individual liberty has been steadily eroded over the centuries (see Locke, Mill, et al); liberty is not negotiable. It is mine by birthright and I do not choose to surrender it. If it is taken from me, then it will be paid for in blood, if necessary.

"IF man in the state of nature be so free, as has been said; if he be absolute lord of his own person and possessions, equal to the greatest, and subject to no body, why will he part with his freedom?" - Locke
