Sarah Palin Flunks an Interview

John McCain’s running mate for VP Sarah Palin gave a quite disastrous TV interview in which she just did not appear to be either focused or even prepared, I am sure that she will be very angry with herself and not likely to ever repeat it in the future.

As a British Citizen with some personal connections to the States, I can understand the appeal of a candidate like Ms Palin to a large section of the American electorate and reject the disdain displayed by both the American and European “smart people” who would no doubt consider themselves cultured and urbane.

A British Blog on the Daily Telegraph

One of their regular contributors Alex Spillius made a big thing about it so did people writing comments to it and it kind of annoyed me because behind it all was ignorance and a desire to sneer at other people which is neither nice nor justified, my comment is below:

The Bard of Burnham Utters…

And the significance of this is to a Briton who doesn’t have a say in the matter ?

Look you can have an opinion on the sex life of Goldfish but unless you happen to be a Goldfish, it is purely academic.

Having lived and worked in the States, the thing that always irks me is the fact that fellow Britons really do not understand the cultural context of the American electoral system. Too many people seem to want to poke fun or denigrate this aspect or that, see it as bad quality TV soap and so on, this is not just rude, it is also very wrong.

However odd it may seem, the American system has a purpose and is far more searching of those candidates that seek high office than anything we see over here in the UK.

When it comes to Sarah Palin giving a poor account of herself in an interview, do we have the right to laugh and mock her after David Miliband’s speech to the Labour Conference this week or the equally poor effort by Harriet Harmon both of whom were excruciatingly bad ?

Miliband holds one of the great Offices of State, Foreign Secretary and he is so bad at this job that the Russian Foreign Secretary just laughs at him. This boy who would be King is mooted as an alternative PM to the awful and failed Gordon Brown.

Sorry but when it comes to Sarah Palin, the Americans will get to decide her fate in a few weeks time whereas we are stuck with the most derelict and dysfunctional Government for another 18 months. Personally I am more interested in how we can prise the grasping craws of Labour from their seats in Parliament.
