David Cameron and a Very Odd Media…

The thing I find most fascinating in the current fiscal crisis where clearly, the fact that we in the UK are so unprepared is wholly down to Gordon Brown and his lack of foresight and control of the British economy, is the rather “too sudden turn” by the media to attack Cameron and the Tory party. It is all rather odd and one wonders just who is paying/promising what and to whom but, the smell of total corruption and possibly copious “back handers” hangs very heavy in the air.

In simple terms, none of this is David Cameron’s or, George Osborne’s fault plus that in these times, a responsible opposition has a difficult line to walk on behalf of the Nation. One can try and attack the Government at the political level but at the same time, try and avoid “talking the economy down” and making matters worse.

The Right Wing Comment Boards on the Web

These are very interesting if not, downright fascinating. The entries vary from the rather too obvious left wing Trolls claiming to be “disillusioned former Tories” who would never vote for Cameron to the “hang and flog” branch of the Tory Party which is supported by Simon Heffer and his acolytes which amounts to pretty much the same thing. But the real interest is just why this is happening at this time and in such an ‘orchestrated fashion.’

The reality is that due to its global nature, no one in any country knows how to handle the current economic situation because whilst history always repeats itself – a slump following a boom, the inter-related nature of the global economy makes things very different. It just doesn’t come down to a “State vs Private Sector” solution or Right Wing set against Left Wing policies, there are few obvious routes available.

For now, everybody is flying blind and as the Conservatives do not have the power to alter current directions in specific policies, there is little that can be usefully said or done by them at this time. However, ‘Silence’ does not mean passive or ‘ active consent’ to the Governments policies instead it implies an active scepticism reinforced by the certainty that Gordon will screw it up anyway, this was always going to be an election for Labour to lose rather than the Tories win.

We Don’t Deserve Democracy – Apparently

Perhaps the funniest comments one sees is those which call the British electorate “totally stupid” and this is untrue. To start with, we are all the “electorate” and if you look back from 1945 forwards, you will see that the British electorate has shown some considerable “collective sophistication” in its electoral choices, whether you and I agree with the specific outcomes or not.

In fact when people call the electorate – ‘other people not me’, “stupid” what they are really saying is that they disagree with the result which is why the EU bans democracy in all its dealings, just like the USSR. I note that next year, our “wonderful Parliament” will only sit for one third of the year so I guess Comrade Brown is trying to get rid of democracy in the UK altogether because we cannot be relied upon to give the “right answers” when asked.

The Next Election

Brown and Labour are “mired” in their own incompetence, I don’t think that there are any circumstances under which the Labour Party will form the Government after the next election. However, a Labour loss does not necessarily equal a Tory victory and a hung Parliament is still a likely result.

This is not because Cameron and Osborne are ‘rubbish’ as an Opposition, it would make no difference if one were Churchill and the other Thatcher. Those who pine for David Davis let alone the “Hush Puppy Queen” of yesterday Ken Clarke as Chancellor – he would only want to sell us into the bondage of the Euro and the EU, totally miss the point. The public are totally disillusioned with the lies and spin that they now associate all politicians with.

The descent from the high hopes of May 1997 to the virtual gutter of today, the disgraceful behaviour of MPs of all parties over pay and expenses and their total disconnection from “us” as they sit inside the bubble of the “Westminster Village” surrounded by their acolytes, Nick Robinson and such of the same ilk.

The public also know that the economic situation is bad but not yet, just how bad it will get so for the moment, they are not yet ready for the strong message of an “Austerity Period”, they are in transition and politics is always the “art of the possible”.

The main threat to the Conservatives lies not in their leadership, it lies in the fact that at the last General Election just under 60% voted and next time it could be a lot worse. If this was combined with widespread tactical voting, we might not just see a hung Parliament with no overall control but we might also see substantial “One Issue Independents”, BNP, Communists and so on so that even effective coalition government becomes impossible.
