A Wasted Emergency Budget

Essentially I suspect that Alistair Darling is a decent man, his honest appraisal in an interview some months ago seems to support such a view when he said that the economic situation was the worst for 60 years unfortunately, Gordon Brown isn’t.

The key problem here is that economic considerations will take a very secondary place to Brown’s ego. He lusted so long for the top job, got it and has made a total horlicks of it. As with the current situation, which he insists on blaming “America” for in order to deflect blame from his own fiscal incompetence whilst Chancellor, he will not accept that he is a totally useless Leader and Prime Minister.

Bonkers Brown

I was impressed with Jeremy Vine the other day on Radio 2 when interviewing Brown, unlike the political lobbyists such as Robinson and Marr who are gutless, he did have a go at Brown in his interview so well done him.  That Brown wouldn’t “fess up” to the ghastly mistakes he has made is of little surprise, what politician ever does ? But what was interesting were not the heavily rehearsed answers, it was the pattern of them. Gordon Brown has a totally disconnected view of just about everything, to say he is ‘floating down a river in Egypt’ (don’t we wish !), understates the case by a mile, he is totally bonkers.

Bottom line is that Brown will insist on a partisan and reckless fiscal policy whilst hoping to luck that circumstances will make him and Labour look ‘viable’ come the next Election which is now only 18 months away. To be fair, it is his only hope and the Labour backbench drones will support him because it also is their only hope too. Mind you, although the thought of Labour wining the next General Election is horrible, even if they did, the Labour Party will dethrone him as Leader at the earliest possible moment. How they must regret not having a Leadership contest last year.

Spending Taxpayer’s Money

Following what is an Emergency Budget with a temporary reduction in VAT and various other measures, the long term financial liabilities in terms of National Debt are quite horrific. If one does argue that any Government is right to attempt to stimulate the economy under these circumstances, I would have thought that ‘Major Infrastructure Projects’ is where the money should go so whilst the public debt cannot be avoided at least there would be long term benefits .

The real problem is that the major infrastructure projects that could make a difference in both the short and long term and would be worth funding in these days, are just not “advanced enough” to come off the drawing board and be put into action. Now would be a good time to kick start the new airport in the Thames Estuary or get to work on the Severn Estuary Barrage. Build some high speed rail links, upgrade the London Underground…

These are the sort of projects that Government spending should be directed to so that the Nation as it repays debt is at least getting the benefit of faster/better travel and hydro electricity. Instead, Brown will hose taxpayers money away leaving behind nothing but expensive debt. Labour has a reputation for fiscal incompetence whilst in power but Brown has now topped even their League Table but then, that gentleman has only one thing in view – getting re-elected, the country can go to the dogs for all he cares !
