Now More than a Simple Referendum
A chap who is a Conservative MEP, writes for the Telegraph Daniel Hannan and is great fun posed the following question on his DT Blog:
“Can someone explain to me why Gordon Brown wants Ireland to vote twice on the Lisbon Treaty while simultaneously insisting that Britain shouldn’t vote at all?”
As ever, me being “Mr Helpful” I supplied some answers…
The Answer is Obvious Daniel…
Gordon Brown is clinically insane just like Robert Mugabe, the proofs are as follows:
The Labour Party promised a Referendum on the EU Constitution which the Lisbon Treaty is, in fact likely 80% of the EU Constitution has already been put in place by Brussels in their usual sneaky way. His reasoning for not giving us a Referendum is as follows:
“We promised a Referendum on the No.39 Bus, this bus is called the No.49 Bus and therefore you don’t get to vote !”
This of course is the idiot who claims to have saved the World, sold our Gold Reserves for half price, totally screwed up our economy in 10 years as Chancellor whilst claiming to have ended Boom & Bust in the UK economy. He is so totally disconnected from any sense of reality that at a time when 30-50% discounts are common in the shops, he thinks a 2.5% reduction in VAT is a good idea and will stimulate further sales.
All that has achieved is to deprive the Treasury of £12.5 billion much needed tax revenue and to put that into perspective consider this : The two aircraft carrier program is being delayed by 2 years to save money, the project is budgeted at £3.4 billion, for the lost VAT receipts, we could have built 6 carriers.
You are not dealing with a sane person and his Cabinet reflects the people surrounding Hitler in the Berlin Bunker, every policy announcement has a “start date” after the next election, bit like ordering non-existent Panzer Divisions into action.
The man is totally nuts, there is no logic in any of his actions except to cling on to power at any price including bankrupting the Country.
Another Take..
Quite amusingly on a clearly right wing British newspaper there are some French and German people contributing who for various reasons, I’m sure, disagree with the average ‘Brit view’ so I felt honor bound to steer them in the right direction – bless.
Look what happens in France and Germany is important to the French and German people and quite rightly so. If you are happy with your ‘democratic processes’, the EU, the Euro and Brussels, I am delighted for you, long may you prosper and so forth…
However, whilst the DT is a right wing British paper and therefore one would expect that a majority if not all, would be anti-EU, though not anti Europeans, I suspect that neither of you in this or any other contributions I have seen of yours, quite understand the position. The EU Referendum issue is rather different from what you imagine although it does make a good focal point for discussions on our Constitution which I will return to in a moment.
The EU issue has really moved on within the UK and a vote on the Lisbon Treaty is not the solution is any longer. In the next Parliament following a General Election, we need to negotiate the terms for the UK having a trade only relationship with the EU and then that needs to be put to the British Electorate in a Referendum, very simple IN or OUT.
I must admit that I have never understood those on mainland Europe who quite rudely attack any Briton who wants the UK to remain independent, it is illogical, like trying to keep a partner who no longer loves you, very silly.
The main problem concerns our Constitution which is written but on 100s of different bits of paper scattered across almost 1,000 years. Logically it shouldn’t work and as has been said it only did on the basis of a “Gentleman’s Agreement”. Since 1997 and the arrival of Blair’s Visigoths in Parliament it has started to break down and Gordon Brown is the culmination of all barbarity. We suddenly are aware that effectively we are living in a one party state and given that the British Prime Minister’s powers are so extensive, the uncomfortable thought is; “Gordon Brown is just stupid but what if he were a British Hitler ?”
You will understand that the EU is not very important set against such matters.
A Final Thing…
Finally there was an obvious Tory voter who wanted to “sock it to Labour” and as a consequence ‘questioned’ the sincerity of David Cameron over his promise to hold a Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty so…
Whilst I can understand your question, I am a Tory by nature, in a sense and what we all have to realise is that we have reached a crucial moment in our history where some fundamental modifications are required to our system of Governance to introduce new checks and balances on whoever is in power. In fact to my mind, the most important element of leaving the EU would be to repatriate our Law making and Administration – our system is totally different to Continental Europe to start with.
Although not intended, our “Party System” and the inexorable rise of the professional politician is choking the life out of our democracy and we the citizens need to dilute it at the next election by voting in more independent candidates for Parliament so that no Party which forms a government has an overall majority.
What we have had from 11 years of Labour is a big psychological switch from any attempt at consensus to “rule by majority” only. People who complain about Cameron not providing a competent Opposition are wrong because they are ignoring the “bully boy” mindset of Gordon Brown and the total spinelessness of 99% of all Labour MPs.
The “complication” for someone like David Cameron is that the “EU” is not an election winner as a topic, nothing connected to “constitutions and governance” ever are to be fair so, it is not a topic to bet the farm on. His problem is to keep discipline inside the Tory Party and as we know, Europe helped kill off John Major. I have no doubt that if elected prior to the final ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, that he would deliver a Referendum however, as I have said earlier, we now want rather more than this.
