David Cameron and the EU
Whilst I would personally like to see us leave tomorrow and cheer, what is more important is the “democratic deficit” of the EU and I would not want that repeated within the UK because I am not afraid of Referendums. I see little point in having a Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, as Ireland demonstrates, the EU will ignore a NO vote and anyway by now, has likely implemented two thirds of the provisions of the original EU Constitution rejected by France and the Netherlands, that is their way.
What we need to do is negotiate a “trade only” deal with the EU and put it to the British people in a “IN or OUT” Referendum, this would not only be the democratic thing to do but would also create a working template for any other Country that might find itself in similar circumstances in the future whilst protecting the EU from disintegration. In reality, Britain’s relationship with the EU and the EU’s relationship with the UK can only improve and prosper with the UK outside of the political EU.
What We Now Know
The recent vote in the EU Parliament on imposing the “Working Time Directive” on the UK despite its opt outs from that are a sign of things to come and clearly illustrate that “Gordon Brown’s Red Lines” are not worth the paper they are written on because even if every British MEP had voted against the Working Time Directive, it would have been imposed. A bit like the EU Parliament removing the CAP from French farmers – would they dare ?
A single issue party like UKIP will not be able to gain 350 seats in Parliament in the next, 16 months away election so in terms of political tactics, they are not a serious “tool or method” for extracting the UK from the EU. All that will happen by voting UKIP is that the Tory vote will get squeezed and we need a Tory Government because Labour have sold us into bondage and the LibDems will runaway from the issue because their Leader gets £60k pa pension for being a former MEP.
Is Cameron Pro-EU ?
As to whether David Cameron is ‘pro-EU’, I have no idea, he has promised to run the Lisbon Treaty Referendum if he is elected and providing it is not already in-force which truth to tell, is a bit limp wristed. What is certain is that because of “jobs for life with little work involved”, the British Establishment as in Senior Civil Servants are and like Nick Clegg and the LibDems, that is a barrier to be overcome.
When Cameron moves into Downing Street, he will be faced with the largest amount of economic crap that any Tory PM has ever met once Labour leave town. The EU will not be his priority but Sterling and restructuring the UK economy will and THERE lies the means of leaving the EU, not UKIP. Because the UK economic cycle is totally different to the EU, conflicts will arise over the next 5 years that will inevitably lead to the relationship changing.
Would Britain Suffer ?
There have been comments regarding the City of London losing out to Frankfurt is the UK was outside the EU – who knows and who cares, either the City adapts or it dies ? No country or business in the EU does business with the UK or British companies out of ‘kindness’, we can only get and hold the business we deserve. There was some idiot Scottish Minister prattling on about 3 million UK jobs rely on us being within the EU, well leaving aside the current downturn and its effects, given our trade deficit, there are probably 12 million EU jobs that relied on the UK. Clinging on to the past has destroyed Europe more times than enough, let us move forward and the EU is not the vehicle for the UK but may be for others.
Forget all the complicated stuff, think simply: You have lost your job and the house you live in. Previously you were an “important person with a certain lifestyle” but no more. The best thing that can happen to you is that your wife leaves you because ‘she is not prepared to live in poverty’. Excellent, now all your pretensions and illusions have been shattered along with your need to ‘keep up appearances’, you can get on with building a new tomorrow.
Our Future
In very different ways, both Germany and France who dominate the EU, are living in the past. We have a saying in this Country about the “Pot calling the kettle black”, it means ‘projecting’ your weakness upon others. In the UK we do not yearn for past days of Empire and never have, nothing is constant, all is in flux and change but these small islands have through the Centuries been forward looking. When people call those of us who want to leave the EU backward looking, is it us or them or, is it the kettle calling the pot black ?
We got rid of an Empire, just why did we lack the self confidence and belief in ourselves so that we ended up in this bureaucratic nightmare that is the EU which has, along the way, rotted the very heart and soul of British politicians, civil servants and the judiciary.
In our history and before, we have ended up with a corrupt ruling classes and it has been resolved only once by a true Civil War, most times change and regeneration have been effected without great social drama and now will be no different, economics will be the tool by which we slip our anchor and leave the EU.
