The EU Working Time Directive
The European Parliament has voted by 421 to 273 against to abolish the British Working Time Directive from 3 years time. As the UK has 78 MEPs, even if all had voted to retain it (The Labour MEPs voted to scrap it), the opt out negotiated by a Conservative Government in 1993 would have been taken away and this Directive imposed upon the UK whether it wanted it or not.
Just more nonsense from the Euro fascists but this time, very illuminating nonsense because of what it highlights which is that no negotiated “opt outs” or “special arrangements” will withstand these EU people, their word is not their bond.
Sailing into Stormy Weather
Although I would love to see the United Kingdom out of the EU if only so that we may clean up British Public Life and make public servants responsible to the electorate once again, that does not mean that I wish harm to the countries and economies of the EU, I wish them all well.
It is in this context that I find the events in Greece disturbing with the rioting that followed the death of a 15 year old lad who it would seem was likely killed by a ricochet from a Police warning shot. It is impossible not to feel that the spread of the rioting and its duration, speak of other problems beyond just the death of this young man, however tragic the circumstances.
Now More than a Simple Referendum
A chap who is a Conservative MEP, writes for the Telegraph Daniel Hannan and is great fun posed the following question on his DT Blog:
“Can someone explain to me why Gordon Brown wants Ireland to vote twice on the Lisbon Treaty while simultaneously insisting that Britain shouldn’t vote at all?”
As ever, me being “Mr Helpful” I supplied some answers…
No Guts, No Brains, No Knickers…
Clearly I am no fan of Gordon Brown and the Labour Party but I must admit that I really fell about laughing yesterday on hearing the German Finance Minister Herr Steinbruck’s comments on Brown’s spend and borrow strategy particularly coming so close on the “We saved the World…” claim by Brown, no doubt using the ‘Royal We’.
Brown’s feeble attempts to project the blame for our current difficulties on the “American Sub Prime” fiasco rather than his own total incompetence as first Chancellor and now Prime Minister was convincingly taken apart by the American Economist Irwin Steltzer, a former ‘Brown Groupie’ the other day. However the scale of Brown’s failure is staggering…
The Two Aircraft Carriers…
It was interesting today to hear the news that due to cash constraints, the two super sized aircraft carriers were going to be delayed or to be exact, their build programmes extended so that they enter service two years later. The HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, were due to come into service in 2014 and 2016, as the biggest and most powerful warships the UK has ever built.
Now there is an issue here and has been for some time, these are supposed to fly the new Joint Strike Fighter being developed in the US which are not likely to be available until 2014 at the earliest and, there are continuing doubts about the VTOL version anyway which leads me to think…
Our Parliament – What Won’t Work…What Might
The real problem which current events have illustrated only too clearly is that the House of Commons where all executive powers rest, is increasingly divorced from the people, us the citizens, that it is supposed to represent. That the Labour Party is by nature “tribal” is a fact but never more so than under Brown and facing electoral oblivion.
Although hardly a ‘vote winner’ or even a subject of great interest to the average voter, under New Labour we have seen the never ending erosion of our Civil Liberties which accelerated to Light Speed after 9/11. Constitutions are designed to protect the rights of the individual citizens from being oppressed by the State whilst also defining the rights and obligations of being a citizen, it is meant to be a two way street and today just isn’t because it is far too weighted in favour of the State.
Restoring Our Parliament…
To me the most significant thing to come out of the “Damien Green Affair” must be the realisation that our Parliament that functioned so well on little more than a “Gentleman’s Agreement” has finally under New Labour, broken down and illustrated just how close we are and regardless of political party in power, to totalitarian rule.
As things now stand a “British Hitler” could rise to power and there is nothing to prevent them from doing anything they like including enslaving the whole population, selecting “undesirable elements” to be sent to Concentration Camps to be exterminated and so on. Is this an over dramatic and wild statement or sadly too true ? Let’s look at it together…
You Need to Plan Ahead
It is not wrong to use public money to invest in major infrastructure and construction projects to provide real work for people that will keep the economy moving forward during a Slump, however, there are some basic rules that should be applied.
The projects should have major economic benefits moving forward into the future. Rather than treating this as a “failure” it is an “opportunity” to do things that in other times just would not happen or be affordable. If you want to build a hydro electric dam, railways and so forth, now would be the time to do it but it cannot be done on the spur of the moment, you needed to have planned for this long before; you need to have a sense of “A Vision or at least a Road Map…”
Barrosso Euro Foot in Mouth
Apparently the EU Bureaucrat in Chief told a French TV show that he had been talking to the people who matter in the UK and they want to join the Eurozone. It was a totally extraordinary thing to say in public and the words and phrases used, guaranteed to raise hackles with a considerable percentage of the British electorate.
The UK in or out of the Euro is a non story, the reality is that we in the UK will have to restructure our economy against the background of our floating currency – Sterling because however painful, that effective devaluation is a key part of the solution which perhaps, is what people within the Eurozone fear…
The Damien Green Affair – ‘Plods’ Along
Today is one of those delicious and funny moments when the wheels really do come off the wagon and it is impossible not to bend yourself in two laughing. What is really funny is that it was all pretty predictable and what brain dead lump of pond life thought that using an Anti-Terror Police squad for the purpose, needs to retire immediately.
The day started with the MET appointing a Senior outside officer to investigate the ‘investigation’ the procedures and chain of events involved in it. As someone pointed out, this is a sure sign that the Police want to walk away from this one, asap.
