Religion is Not Evil, People Often Are…

im-mary

I was watching a DT blog the other day written by George Pitcher concerning British Muslims and advocating tolerance and so forth. In no time at all there were quite a flood of comments 90% of which were negative, a number of which were very anti-religion of any kind.

As a Catholic of Irish origins but London born, I have an empathy with all British Asians (note not just Muslims), following 9/11 and 7/7 they are often viewed as the “Enemy Within”. This has always been so for Catholics, take a “Catholic Stance” on anything even today and watch the vitriol and bile flow in the “Reader’s Comments of the DT, if you doubt me.

The Future, Will the Euro Survive ?

im-eu

There have been over these past few months, numerous people speculating upon the future of the Euro in terms the current economic crisis and the economic disparity of the countries within the Eurozone. It has always been my objection to the Euro, how on earth can you compare the German economy to the Greek or most others ?

I don’t want us in the UK to be within the Eurozone or for that matter, within the Political EU, that does not mean to say that I wish either any harm any more than I would say the USA and the Dollar, I just want Britain to be Britain once again.

Leaving Afghanistan

im-harry

Sooner rather than later, we the US and NATO will have to withdraw from Afghanistan simply because the Western public are not prepared to accept the cost in cash or casualties. There is no risk of a military defeat but I think that the main problem lies in there being no obvious and attainable goals either military or political unless the West is prepared to ‘dig in’ for a 20 year haul.

The sounds from President Obama suggest that despite this ’surge’ of 17,000 combat troops plus support, it is likely that US policy over Afghanistan will change in the immediate future.

United in a Shared Experience

im-browncameron

Over the next few days, the grisly business of politics will return to its usual drab work but for this day when young Ivan Cameron lost his battle for life, we are all in a way united. Neither David nor Samantha Cameron ‘deserved’ to lose their son, we are not built to survive our children but then, neither did the parents of the three brave soldiers who died this day either and perhaps in this sense, this death ’stands’ in some kind of symbolic way for many.

It is not a matter of Cameron being ‘celebrity status’ it is a reminder that neither position nor money can insulate anyone from the slings and arrows of ‘Life’.

However much I have upbraided him and most assuredly will again in the future, Gordon Brown spoke well and fittingly in the House this day as did William Hague. For once our politicians can have a pride in their behaviour and perhaps for the first time in a very long time, the expression of their dignity and ours.

Cameron as Tory Leader

im-dave02

Iain Martin wrote an interesting blog in the Telegraph based upon comparing the “Leadership Speculation” in the Labour Party and the total lack of it within the Conservative Party. Mind you and knowing the ‘profile’ of the average respondent, he quite rightly anticipated quite a lot of the feedback.

I must admit that I find a lot of these “bluer than blue” supposed Tory supporters with their Cheerleader Simon Heffer, quite fascinating: What are they for and does it not occur to them that if Cameron took their advice, there would never be another Conservative Government, ever.

The Next Leader of the Labour Party

im-brownharmon

In a sense this follows on from my previous essay “Situations Vacant…” However, I blame Andrew Pierce entirely for me returning to the topic so soon because of a brilliantly amusing article in the Telegraph entitled: “Harriet Harman: Britain’s most deluded woman ?”

Perhaps the sub-heading is even better: “Unashamedly ambitious, Harriet Harman believes she’s a leader-in-waiting. But the party’s MPs have other ideas, says Andrew Pierce” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/andrewpierce/4692030/Harriet-Harman-Britains-most-deluded-woman.html

However it does raise others thoughts and issues…

We in the West need to Change Our Approach…

im-islam

It is said that “history Repeats Itself…” and indeed it does but never, in quite the same way which is what we in the ‘West’ need to understand most when dealing with “Moslem Countries and their Culture” abroad and most of all “Our Enemy OR Asset Within” local Muslims who due to previous immigration policies are resident here. They need to evolve their faith and approach to a secular society as British Muslims and whilst keeping their faith ‘pure’, reject what were or are just local ‘tribal customs’ which are irrelevant to their lives here in the UK.

In order to deal with the current Middle East situation on the one hand we have to understand that the situation in Moslem countries today is little different from that of the internal circumstances faced by Christian countries in the ‘Middle Ages’ which led to the ‘Crusades’.

We Hate Thatcher…

im-maggie

Quite often one sees articles and old farts ‘doing anti-Thatcher’ things. For people like Joe Brand, Morrisay and Adrian Chiles, ’sneaking Green Room stuff’ is their meat and drink and required when faced with fading careers.

To be frank, the ‘loathing of Thatcher’ by an actresses such as Duncan, the ‘I am so clever’ Johnathan Miller and all the other ‘Luvvies’ is of little surprise to ordinary people but, it has an amusing side to it too – total irrelevance to ‘today’s audience’. All of these sad people are clinging to the past and likely despite bigger waists, failing eyesight and receding hairlines, unaware of their transition from ‘teenage rebel’ to an ancient ‘establishment figure’ in the view of younger people.

Situations Vacant…

im-browndarling1

Already and we are still some 15 months out from a General Election, the Media is turning its attention to who will replace Gordon Brown as Leader of the Labour Party following their defeat at the next election, the list of potential “Runners and Riders” is to say the least totally uninspiring.

Does it matter who comes next, a Harmon, a Moribund…? In all honesty I suspect not because all the very best the next incumbent can hope to be is a “John the Baptist” to their successors “Christ” because Labour will have far more problems to deal with than who the next Leader is, they will have to explain what “Labour is For” and right now, they haven’t a clue.

More on Windows 7 Beta

im-baldy

When running “Beta” software of any kind, the basic rule of thumb applies: Never run it on a PC that contains “mission critical” applications and data because sometimes and indeed the reason that beta testing is done, an unforeseen ‘event’ could wipe out or corrupt, your hard drive, destroy your data.

So I first installed it on an ‘older’ desktop which is more a back up resource to my main PCs than an actual ‘production’ one and of course copied off all the data on it first. As the install on that went well and the Operating System (Windows 7), runs sweetly even in 2Gb of RAM, I decided to become ‘brave’…
