In today’s Daily Telegraph, Matthew d’Ancona postulated the idea that perhaps the last week in January, in many ways be the week when Labour lost the next election. His point was not that there was any one specific news item or individual event, merely a sudden accumulation of many that collectively speak loudly of a dead Duck if not actually a rotting corpse.

But in a sense, it was hardly worth writing although I suppose, a journalist has to write something. The reality has been for some considerable time that even if Brown single-handedly solved the global crisis, he would still be out on his ear come the next election.

He seems an odd person and having one eye, one might accept him having impaired vision but I thought his hearing worked. It is his total deafness to the voices of ordinary people which is so startling, his claims to be ‘listening’ matched with actions that clearly demonstrate that he is not.

The most amusing and interesting comments he has made came yesterday in his talking about us in the UK “needing to have confidence in ourselves”. He is right and actually, a lot of us do and also know that we will come through all of this, albeit it with some difficulties. But what he doesn’t yet seemed to have cottoned on to yet is that it will be “without him and his cronies”. Mr & Mrs Big Balls will have to be content with being, “Mr&Mrs ordinary Balls”, such is the way of the world.

Have We All Learned ?

The only question that I would pose is this: Have both the public at large and the politicians of all parties come to realise that it is we, the very ordinary people who not only fight wars but also create the wealth and well-being of these islands ? The role of politicians and Government is merely to ‘play mood music’ and create an environment in which we the “people” can weave our magic.

Regardless of political philosophy, surely all must realise that the death of New Labour is also the death of “Big Government”. We are the Masters, they the Servants, willing victims for the cleansing public “blood sacrifice” that has to be made from time to time at a General Election. The Incas would not approve, Brown is hardly a virgin !
