Not Bold Enough…

im-green-brown-cameron

The problem with Gordon Brown is simply that he just doesn’t grasp the significance of events as they develop and consequently, he is far too slow to take positive action. I suppose if I was being unkind, because Labour is so used to making “policy announcements” over the years and likely only 25% of which turned into some kind of action, talk rather than action is all to him.

The fuss about MP’s expenses and allowances in one sense, is not that important of itself. At times such as these, people will pick on most things where “people in power” seem rather cavalier with public money however, not dealing with the situation decisively, can only make matters worse. David Cameron’s words today were right, “Let us meet and sort it out, we don’t need to wait on this one…” Well something along those lines, let’s face it, it isn’t rocket science…

Sport as Theatre

im-f1-racing

I must admit that I am not a great sports fan these days. Gone are the days that I would always watch Match of the Day, most F1 Races and Tennis which I only could really start enjoying once Tim Henman was knocked out as he inevitably was.

But this past weekend, three sporting events gave me cause to sit and ponder exactly why I had lost interest in watching sport on TV and I came to an interesting discovery…

Reform of the Bill of Rights 1688 – No !

im-pens

In the 1688 Bill of Rights and later reinforced in the Act of Settlement in 1701, Catholics were positively discriminated against so that they could never marry into the Royal Family and become therefore Queen or Queen’s Consort and retain their religion and therefore an assumed “allegiance to Rome”.

The proposal is in a Private Members Bill launched by Liberal Democrat MP Evan Harris which as most do, will fail without Government support. However in terms of changing the current state of affairs, even as a Catholic, I oppose such changes and any modifications should be considered carefully and over time.

A British Bill of Rights

im-straw

Another sign of a Government and Parliament well into its terminal decline is when it starts publishing Green Papers on measures that it knows full well, will have no time to make it to the Statute Book before the next General Election.

All pointless noise and hot air so it is no surprise to discover who is behind this latest opus, none other than mighty intellect of Jack Straw who normally confines himself to an annual attempt at once again failing to Reform the House of Lords, he must have lots of time on his hands to fiddle with yet another dead parrot.

The Final Straw, Time to Clean the Stables Out !

im-mcnulty

In some ways and based upon whenever I’ve seen him interviewed, I have quite liked Tony McNaulty because he seemed a far more solid chap than the average Labour Cabinet Minister. However his involvement in the current Parliamentary expenses scandal and his lack of honesty merely demonstrates that there is absolutely no one in this Government of any integrity what so ever.

It is also perfectly clear that there needs to be a radical reform of how much, what and under what rules, any Member of Parliament gets paid, the current situation being clearly no longer tenable and clearly, MPs of all parties being far too venial to produce decent and transparent changes to clean up Parliament’s oh so tarnished reputation.

Can the Web Deliver Politically ?

im-engspk1

There was much talk during the American Presidential Campaign as to how Barak Obama and his team had “harnessed the web” to help him secure his victory. He had not just used it to project his message but also as an effective means of fund raising. The question being posed in the UK was whether a British politician or Party, could do the same.

For a whole number of reasons, I was already looking into various aspects of this for my own reasons and if of interest, in the following I will share my thoughts:

The Devil Drink…

im-cheers

Of recent times we are assailed with health warnings on alcohol and how our youth, both male and female are addicted to binge drinking…blah, blah, blah… The truth is that by now after 12 years of this nasty, nagging, meddling and hectoring Labour Government, people by and large have just stopped listening to anything they say on any subject and they really should have cottoned on to this by now.

There are several issues that arise from this behaviour by the Government that I want to comment upon but first a real treat…

The Opposite of Love is not Hate, it is Indifference…

im-pope

On this basis perhaps the Catholic Church can feel ‘at ease’, it will be subject to visceral attacks at every turn and therefore must today count itself as still totally “Relevant”.

This current ‘story’ concerns what the Pope may or may not have said to journalists on a flight in Africa. To be fair, some idiot in the Curia may have “embellished” a word which changed the meaning/interpretation to a broader, more sceptical and aggressively anti-catholic media. The consequence was that the “Western Media” decided it had something to ‘froth about’, truth took a second seat.

Actually and to be truthful, I rather like this “Holy Father” and his media gaffs because he seems truly genuine. He is an “Academic” and therefore truly un-worldly and non-political. In a sense he speaks with enthusiasim and the genuine “haven’t got all the details quite together yet…” Which is what makes him just that bit ‘special’.

Verging on the Ridiculous…

im-virgin

You really do know that the Lunatics have taken over the asylum when you read stories such as the following:

Apparently, a trainspotter has been ordered to stop photographing trains on a station for “security” reasons. Now of course, it is common knowledge that Macclesfield station, Cheshire lies at the very heart of the United Kingdom’s security network protecting the Bakewell Tart recipe… I really do hope Richard Branson takes notice.

Independent Members of Parliament

im-hp

Today saw the launch of an interesting idea, an umbrella organisation for finding and supporting independent MPs during election campaigns and using the web and text voting to allow the public to select particular candidates for their constituency, I’m not quite clear how the latter will work in the UK…

The people behind this led by businessman Sir Paul Judge, a former director general of Conservative Central Office, who believe that the internet will fundamentally begin to change politics and that the party system has “turned the government and the political system into the domain of a very small number of people where arrogance has developed… Their web site is : – http://www.juryteam.org/ I wish them well in a brave venture.
