A British Bill of Rights

im-straw

Another sign of a Government and Parliament well into its terminal decline is when it starts publishing Green Papers on measures that it knows full well, will have no time to make it to the Statute Book before the next General Election.

All pointless noise and hot air so it is no surprise to discover who is behind this latest opus, none other than mighty intellect of Jack Straw who normally confines himself to an annual attempt at once again failing to Reform the House of Lords, he must have lots of time on his hands to fiddle with yet another dead parrot.

The British Bill of Rights

Are we looking at a modern day Magna Carta or, an updated version of the Bill of Rights of 1689 ? Sadly no it would appear because it will not be legally enforceable through the Courts instead it will merely be a “Pious Wish List” that will be ignored by all.

The reality is that there is no point in passing any “Bill of Rights” until all Law Making and legislation is repatriated from Brussels and the Law Lords are the final and supreme Court in the process of UK Justice for British citizens. The incorporation of the 60 year old European Convention on Human Rights into British Law was, to say the least “unwise” and has proven to be

A good example of this is the EU wide arrest warrants which deprive British Citizens of the protection of British Courts because of a political decision by Tony Blair that was expedient in the view of his Government or ensured him and his family yet another “freebie” summer holiday.

Herein lies the whole point surely ?

A Bill of Rights of any kind must surely delineate obligations and duties to both sides of the equation, both the Citizen and the Government. If a citizen is required to abide by the Law of the Land, then the Law must deliver a clearly defined process complete with appropriate and enforceable checks and balances that exclude political interference, pious hopes don’t enter the picture.

If British Courts are not supreme within the British Judicial system and neither is the British Parliament with 80% of Laws imposed upon us from Brussels, then no British Law has any enforceable value, so why bother with this sad fig leaf when Labour through Brown and Millipede have signed our Sovereignty away to Brussels in the cowardly way they did ?

All it does is underline the total ineffectiveness of our elected representatives and they want more money – for what ? It was they who without the permission of the British Electorate, exported their jobs and our democracy. Personally I would impeach every MP of any Party that voted the Lisbon Treaty through the House and, confiscate their pensions too.

Jack Straw

During recent Labour Leadership speculations, Jack Straw was said by some to be a potential candidate, my reaction was “You cannot be serious..!” Even trying my hardest to be kind, I cannot think of any single Leadership quality that he possesses, in a lacklustre Cabinet, the table in the Cabinet Room has more distinction.

His title of Justice Minister seems awfully grand but he lacks the intellect to drive ideas and debate on the things that fall under his brief. The reality is that whilst difficult now, the Human Rights Act which has proven to be a Lawyers and Thieves Charter in practice is going to have to be repealed because it was as ever with New Labour, poorly drafted and badly implemented.

David Cameron is right, it just has to go and instead of some fudge scribbled on the back of a fag packet, a proper Bill of Rights carefully drafted and properly debated put in its place. It is a sign of the man that Mr Straw is, that his current proposals are so weak to the point of being totally pointless, hasn’t the man got a proper job to do ?
