Blair as EU President ?

im-blair-tony

I read an amusing article in the Independent today which centred around Tony Blair pushing his candidacy for the post of the first full time EU President which is based upon the Lisbon Treaty finally being ratified by Ireland voting Yes on the second or third time of asking, the EU will not accept NO under any circumstances. It must really frustrate the “High & Mighty” of Brussels that anything as unimportant as democracy should thwart their evil plans.

What was particularly amusing was the assertion that however begrudgingly, Gordon Brown endorsed Blair, Sarkozy had finally agreed and Merkel, sort of except…If she loses the next German Election and is therefore out of a job, she would want the EU Presidency for herself…

What a Hoot !

I thought that the funniest bit concerned Gordon Brown’s reluctant endorsement, does this idiot actually imagine he will even be in politics in 15 months time ? What are the chances that as British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown will ever meet Tony Blair as the EU President ?

Of course the other reality is that as the EU is a Franco/German stitch-up, if Merkel ‘wants it’ and as Germany is the biggest budget contributor a lot of which goes on the CAP, Blair won’t have a prayer of getting the job in the first place.

Another Dimension Too…

The next PM is most likely David Cameron and whilst he has made no promises apart from the “If the Lisbon Treaty hasn’t been ratified, a Conservative Government will hold a Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty,” he has also indicated that “it will not just stop there if Lisbon has been ‘ratified.”

Now whilst this may seem far too vague to the ‘very right of centre’ part of the Tory Party, it is rather better than that because the “Leader Cameron” has acknowledged that the EU can no longer be kicked into the long grass and sooner rather than later, must be ‘faced’ by both Parliament and the British electorate because both the EU Constitution and the Lisbon Treaty that soft soap version which replaced the former in name only have “Crossed the Rubicon”.

Whilst the average elector is not even remotely interested in “constitutional law”, they are concerned in what directly impacts them and in this context, the worsening economic situation will because EU countries like France, will in effect impose “protectionist” measures to shield their domestic producers from competition and that will show up at the tills…

The Wine Market

Apparently because we are such piss heads, the UK is the most important single wine market and currently are enjoying x3 bottles for £10 – brilliant but they are all “New World” wines, neither the French or even, the Spanish can compete on price. But on the other hand, why should they try ? Should they not be selling on “quality alone” ?

Over the web I listened to several programmes on French Wine Producers and came to the opinion that by and large, they were lazy and stupid people who just wanted to sell their produce through the local co-operative and pick up money. Wrong because if you want to sell quality, I can think of many ways to do it, none of which involve being a moaning EU subsidized git.

There Will be a Referendum…

The truth is that the British people were last asked their opinion on the “Common Market” well over 30 years back and a free trade area has now become a socialist prison which is costing the UK taxpayer, substantial amounts of cash and in a recession, these sums will show up rather quickly.

I suspect that before the next general election, we shall see some pressure for an “IN or OUT” Referendum over the EU before or post the event. People may have got the “Exact Details” of the EU wrong but the upshot is that peripheral things will count heavily just as “MP’s Expenses” do today, the next Parliament cannot avoid a British EU Referendum.
