The Professional Politician Problem

Something that has become all to the “norm” over these past decade or so is the constant rise of the “professional politician”, a person who from University goes down a career path that is totally unrelated to a normal world of work until eventually they emerge as the candidate for a Parliamentary Seat.
Once safely ensconced in the Village of Westminster, they become a typical MP Drone of whatever political party machine they are part of, vote as they are told by the Whips rather than by the interests of their constituents, all pretence of personal conscience discarded once they achieve their first career goal of becoming an MP. “Now for the Red Dispatch Box…”
However Much They Protest…
The above describes the majority of MPs today and whilst some may well argue that any job becoming “a profession” is a natural consequence of the world that we live in, I wonder if this is a good thing and whether we should look at it afresh and even, whether we the public, not the parties, have a set of criteria that everyone must meet before they can even stand for Parliament.
Beyond this, we might limit the number of years any MP may continue to sit in the House, say 10 years being the maximum. We would not wish to lose good politicians or great leaders so at the end of this time, there might be other “tests” that might be applied which would allow a further 10 year continuation…
Whilst this might seem strange, there is a good reason for looking at such ideas in terms of getting a lively as opposed to dull Parliament, a vital debating chamber or as under Gordon Brown, “Drone City for Party Hacks”.
Dishonesty in Parliament
Although I personally think the “Expenses Scandal” was massively overblown and looked at rationally, the reasons behind it all were both obvious and simple to rectify. However, the truth was that for the public at large, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to use a really big stick to beat up a bunch of clowns who had messed up our economy and intruded into our lives with endless bits of badly thought up legislation on this that and the Monkey’s bottom.
We the public need to re-think this rather than the political parties who will only veer towards anything that consolidates power for them. The “Power” is ours and we lend it to one group or another for a maximum of 5 years, it is this bit, “Our Power” that they seem confused about because they think that it is “Their Power”, a view that must be corrected and once corrected, re-enforced by rules and procedures so that it is never forgotten again.
The Needs of the Executive
We must never lose sight of the basic principle of “Governance” which is that we the citizens “lend our power” to the Executive and may not recover that during the “agreed period” which in the UK is a maximum 5 years with earlier options to call an election by various means.
The reality is that any Government during its time will have to make more and less popular agreements, laws and treaties so, they must be allowed the scope to get on with the job with an eye to the greater benefit of the UK as opposed to the current sentiment. However, the assumption is that whilst doing so, they make a “case” which they can later call upon come Election Time to support their reasons for being re-elected !
Gordon the Fuck-Wit
With Gordon Brown’s Government, they broke the basis of this tacit agreement with their behaviour over the Lisbon Treaty which was identical to the EU Constitutional Treaty already rejected by both the French and Dutch and upon which in their 2005 Manifesto, we the public were promised a Referendum. Mind you, we elected Blair and got Brown who walked into the job at the very moment that his crap performance as Chancellor came home to haunt him – brilliant, Hubris !
But the key point was that Brown was too politically stupid to even try to justify his actions for future reference preferring to rely on his Parliamentary majority to “Steam Roller” the legislation through on a whipped vote. His turning up late at Lisbon on a very thin pretext to sign us all into bondage meant exactly what to this pathetic brain dead Muppet maggot ?
Change
Gordon Brown is far more important to British Electoral history than Blair just as was King John and Runnymede to Richard Lion Heart is to the rule of Law as opposed to the whim of the Ruler, simply because he (Brown), was no politician and never understood the “Art of the Possible” and therefore because of his ignorance, has exposed the ‘problems’ that need fixing.
Relying on the integrity of the “Honourable Members” of whatever party is no longer an option, at every level, they can be considered as Vermin which is quite an achievement after 12 years of New Labour and their dominating majorities. Thank Heavens so many are “retiring” along with the natural Electoral Cull.
Yes, we do need change but, let us not throw out the baby with the bathwater so, let us move with both purpose and caution when looking at reforms !
Yes, the snot grovelling new MP who won on a party ticket rather than personal charisma, we need to keep in check because they are just Lobby Fodder but, in doing so we also need to ensure that the elected Executive has the power it needs. Not easy and never was since the days of Ancient Greece and Athens.
