Country First, Self Last

If politicians would only think of the Country first, their Parties second and themselves last of all, there would be very different outcomes to many things and in the case of Gordon Brown, we would have had an Autumn Election. However, it seems that their petty egos carry more weight that any other consideration.
Gordon Brown has shied away from any election contest that he could but this one is unavoidable unless he is removed from office by his own side or leaves Downing Street feet first. Just why he is clinging to power is unfathomable, a week may be a long time in politics but he has been so unlucky for these past two years, just what does he expect to happen that will rescue him ?
In All Truth
There is absolutely no reason for this Labour Government to still be in power unless it is so that Labour MPS of whom over 100 are standing down, want to milk their salaries, expenses, pension entitlements and golden goodbyes before they go. In this respect the House of Commons shows no honour and common decency, this Parliament should have been dissolved already, the Queen’s Speech will be a mockery.
The key issue lies in the fact that in terms of Foreign Policy, nobody is listening to the United Kingdom Government, we have no influence and our voice is no longer heard. Yes and to be fair, they did listen a year ago when Brown was the first one to come out of the shock caused by the Global Crisis and put forward a game plan but since then, the World has moved on.
A Dead Man Walking
Neither the US President over further troop deployments for Afghanistan can be bothered to “keep him in the loop”. Over the EU President and the EU Foreign Secretary appointments, none of the other EU Leaders feel the need to accommodate Gordon Brown and therefore won’t, in the classic phrase, Gordon Brown is “a dead man walking” and has nothing to offer. Every Country knows that he won’t be there after the British General Election so, they are keeping their powder dry and await the “New Man”.
This is very sensible on their part but it also means that British Foreign Policy is drifting and any possibility of influencing events beneficially, totally lost whilst the Albatross sits in No.10.
The last refuge of a scoundrel is patriotism, wrapping themselves in the Union Flag and Brown has tried that too at times though never convincingly. Although it does sound rather old fashioned, the current situation is a disgrace, if he had an ounce of honour, he would ask the Queen for the Dissolution this very day both his and Labour’s time has come and gone, time we all moved on, watching the corpse of this Government rot in public, lacks dignity.
