Is Anybody Listening ?
I have often of late complained of journalists writing up lots of worthless foam from the mouth about the current state of UK politics. I can have a certain empathy with them, they need to try and make it all look exciting and interesting, even if it isn’t because they need to hang on to their jobs but, are they contributing anything ? I doubt it why I have a picture here of Mr Smug himself…
I have had for some time now a feeling that the next election has already been decided some time ago and it is that Gordon Brown and Labour are out and fluctuations in the polls will not change that fact. It is in this sense that I wonder whether the people with the decision, the electorate, are even listening.
The Westminster Bubble
It was interesting to read across the Sunday Papers today the variations on the Hoon/Hewitt open email revolt calling for a secret ballot on Gordon Brown remaining Leader of the Labour Party and therefore Prime Minister. All sorts of motivations are attributed to this person or that, dark behind the scenes motives and and actions hinted at and so on.
Each journalist tries to put this slant or spin on the basic story and yet the only one I’ve seen that was amusing was Matthew Parris in the Times on Saturday under the headline: “They wanted to hurt Gordon Brown, not depose him.” http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/matthew_parris/article6981484.ece
By and large though, most of the words written are pointless because the “characters” themselves are bland and in the totally introverted world Brown inhabits, possibly the worse decision that will ever be made by a politician is Gordon Brown ‘going long’ and leaving the General Election until May, the man is totally bonkersas further evidence, his words today:
Mr Brown said of their move: “I can’t answer for the feelings of one or two people. But politics is full of…you know, large numbers of people are involved and they have to make their own decisions. They have got to be free to make the choices they want.
“I’m sorry it happened. I think it was a form of silliness.”
He added: “I am the Prime Minister and am determined to remain so. I am determined, I am resolute.”
Sorry Gordon, that is not your decision, trust me on this one !
An Incestuous Little World
Sometimes the simple and unvarnished truth is all it takes, to best describe most “events” such as this – sheer lunacy might be one because whether just Hoon and Hewitt were involved or many others besides, all it demonstrates is that these people like Gordon Brown himself, are totally out of touch with the reality in the Country, people have totally lost interest in what happens in the Palace of Westminster, universally they are all seen as a bunch of useless Billy Hunts.
Whether the Government, MPs or their Media Entourages, “Familiars” and Hangers On, we have had enough of them and they are still not listening to us.
The whole “Expenses Scandal” did expose some rather dubious practices as well as some amusing things such as Duck Houses and Moats ! However whilst most people might well be persuaded that MPs should be properly and clearly paid a reasonable income in line with the rules that afflict us all, they will not even start to think about it rationally until the General Election has been called. In the meantime, Oliver Cromwell’s Speech – might suffice for these times:
Dissolution of the Long Parliament by Oliver Cromwell given to the House of Commons, 20 April 1653
It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.
Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse; gold is your God; which of you have not barter’d your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?
Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defil’d this sacred place, and turn’d the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redress’d, are yourselves gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.
In the name of God, go!
