An Odd Story

This story concerns photography and in particular, a ‘back up camera’ I bought towards the end of 2003 called a Canon G5 which is a rather chunky “compact camera” but certainly not something that you could slip in your pocket easily then or, even today’s versions of the same camera such as the G10 and G11, chunky they remain.

At the time I had my original Canon D30 DSLR camera and there is nothing as flexible for ‘serious’ photography whereby you can change lenses and add external flash units however, it does mean carrying a whole bag full of kit around with you which is fine if you are going on a ‘shoot’ but less so if you are carrying a camera on the ‘off chance’ that you might come across a good picture opportunity whilst you are out and about.

The Past Situation

When I moved down to Somerset, I had my 3.3 mega-pixel D30 DSLR and my 5 mega-pixel G5, it was probably the latter that got used most because I had to walk our dog Jack twice a day, come rain or shine so the G5 was ‘less precious’ and easier to shelter when we were caught in the rain and it took pretty good pictures examples of which, are below.

However by 2005 I had traded my cameras up a bit and as a result, sold my G5 to a friend of mine and in 2007 he took it with him on “Harley Route 66” ride across the States and bought back some pretty good images from that. Sometime in late 2008, he sold the G5 on to another mutual friend who wanted to ‘get into’ digital photography.

This Lady lives a long way from me and whilst my Mother was alive, I couldn’t travel any distance or leave here alone for that long however, in March I was able to pay my friend a visit and realised that in all truth, what the G5 could do, she didn’t need at this time and indeed its very capabilities made it rather intimidating. I had on me a Canon IXUS which are truly beautifully made and small, “point and shoot” cameras so, I swapped it with her and my Canon G5 has now ‘returned home’ as it were, how odd !
