The other day, Liverpool Council that most “Tory” of towns announced that they were withdrawing from anything to do with the “Tory Big Society” idea because of the ‘cuts’ to their budget – boo hoo ! Could not even the blind, see that one coming from totally Socialist Liverpool ? They only ‘joined in’ the idea because perhaps by doing so, they thought they might ‘protect existing Central Government hand outs’, the fact that the ‘game’ had long since moved on, never occurred to them.

But it is interesting as an example of whether an idea such as the “Big Society” can even get a hearing in a totally selfish and self-centred world.

As someone who reads the newspapers online, today’s headlines concerning all the budget cuts have been quite amusing if not to say a little disingenuous. It is impossible for anyone to project what the outcomes of the spending reviews and cuts will be in terms of, “Does it solve the problem or will it of itself cause further problems in the future ?”

The equation is very simple. If government spending is too high then basically that spending must be cut by the same percentage that it is too high compared with government revenue. But in dealing with it, there are really only two options either cut expenditure on things like social security and public service jobs (the software) or/and cut any capital projects that the government might pay for be it in civil engineering, infrastructure or defence (the hardware)…

For this article, I have used a picture of Ed Miliband apparently the “Bookies Favourite” to win the Labour Leadership election but in a sense, I could equally have used a picture of Simon Hughes, Deputy Leader of the LibDems because both are in a sense, actors on a stage awaiting the script and director to arrive.

They are both “all dressed up, with nowhere to go” and likely, both destined for oblivion as they await the “Coalition Experiment” to succeed or fail when both will inevitably, be struck down with“performance self doubts” and completely fluff their lines. But it never-the-less led me once again to consider the sheer folly of the Blair Brown fratricidal dispute whilst in Office, albeit with a slightly different perspective…

The oddest thing about Labour going into Opposition is the complete absence of Gordon Brown, this “Political Colossus” as he was often called has disappeared from from the face of British politics. That he would continue on the backbenches as an MP is rather like a Lottery Winner swearing to carry on with his job as a Dustman, is likely a load of bullshit as well as not terribly practical. It reminds me of a description of “Fame”: Stick your hand in a bucket of water, swish it all around and then remove your hand. Once the water has settled again, no one knows that your hand was even there.

It was amusing to see Harriet Harmon as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, standing in in the debate on the Queen’s Speech. Obviously the Labour Party is still in some disarray following its defeat and a prolonged Leadership Contest which will drag on for 4 months, just won’t help too much either. Also set against the background of David Cameron positively glowing and growing in the role of Prime Minister.

John’s article is worth a read. John Rentoul is ‘known’ as a Tony Blair fan and his insights into David Cameron, originally aired as the “Heir to Blair” are quite interesting because overall, his view is favourable but he does not see him as any kind of Blair clone at all.

Matthew Parris a former Conservative MP and not known as someone with a particularly soft heart wrote a very upbeat piece on the Times about the new Coalition Government having sat in the Garden of Downing Street to see the fist joint news conference given by David Cameron as PM and Nick Clegg as his Deputy.

The Independent once again led with another ‘cringe worthy’ editorial on what essentially is a ‘vote LibDem’ ticket which I wouldn’t mind except that they try to dress up their prejudices with ‘grandiose: http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/leading-articles/leading-article-this-historic-opportunity-must-not-be-missed-1962527.html My view on this is:

It is very simple, if you want to vote LibDem, then do so, it is not illegal between consenting adults in the privacy of the poll booth, as far as I know. But do not prattle on about PR being “a great principle of the age”, it really isn’t, the public just don’t give a toss about it. In terms of popular politics, PR is as about as burning an issue as the EU for most voters, whilst the “devotees” of either cause will bang on endlessly about it, nobody in the mainstream is even slightly bothered.

Well there are now only three days left and then we all get to vote and what the public has probably decided already will shape our immediate futures. My hope is that we (a). Don’t have a Hung Parliament and (b). They we do get a Cameron Government with a working majority. Will I get my wish ?

Hard to say really, I suspect that the average elector is playing their cards close to their chests. On the surface, Labour is dead in the water, Clegg and the LibDems are deflating and Cameron is in the ascendant but what that will translate into on Friday, who knows ? However, one of the most crucial events that any new Government will be faced with is the Greek Financial Crisis with its impact on both the Eurozone and the whole EU.

Here in these last few days of the Election, the ‘Guardian has declared for Clegg, the Times for Cameron and all the Indy can do, is moan about the Tories, what a bunch of total Muppets !
