Preserving Regional Public Sector Jobs

There was an Editorial in the Independent today, the aim of which was to “warn” the Conservatives in particular against cuts that cost Government jobs in economically depressed areas. This is all rather odd and a bit mixed up considering the “Indy” is no supporter of the Tories at any time !

However this is rather an odd article in another way because it fails to tackle the problems head on and instead ‘paddles’ in the shallows rather than applying any serious thinking to examining the core issues that lie behind this.

Mediocrity in the Labour Leadership

For this article, I have used a picture of Ed Miliband apparently the “Bookies Favourite” to win the Labour Leadership election but in a sense, I could equally have used a picture of Simon Hughes, Deputy Leader of the LibDems because both are in a sense, actors on a stage awaiting the script and director to arrive.

They are both “all dressed up, with nowhere to go” and likely, both destined for oblivion as they await the “Coalition Experiment” to succeed or fail when both will inevitably, be struck down with“performance self doubts” and completely fluff their lines. But it never-the-less led me once again to consider the sheer folly of the Blair Brown fratricidal dispute whilst in Office, albeit with a slightly different perspective…

The Media Children are Restless

I suspect that the “Media Honeymoon” over the Coalition Government will soon come to an end as the reporting over these past few days seems to signal. Though not, I might add because serious questions are being raised by Government policies, it is not the way the British Media works.

The problem for media people is that they are reactive to events not proactive. “No news”, or even worse, “Good news” is bad for business, there is just no ‘story’ to chase so in the end these “media children” will… Well we all know what the Devil does in making work for idle hands… so, the media will get restless and like children on a journey, keep asking“Are we there yet ?”

Withdrawing British Troops from Sangin

Is it me or are ‘commentators’ totally weird ? Since it was announced that British Forces would hand over Sangin to US Marines, there have been so many ‘Defeat’ articles as to be unbelievable. One in the Independent was by some ‘Nut Job’ who has written a book on Iraq:

To me, the most worrying thing about our deployment in Afghanistan is how we got to this point. Nine years ago, SAS and SBS units helping the “Northern Alliance” was about right but John Reid as Defence Secretary casually starting this deployment with a public view expressed in The Commons, that they (troops), “Will probably come home without a shot being fired…” is indicative of where we are today and how we got there, we got here via complacency.

John Hutton and Public Pensions

Of all the former Labour Ministers, John Hutton was one of the better ones and at least as Defence Minister, looked like he cared. His very public resignation had a degree of ‘principle’ to it and the ever craven David Miliband would have done well to have followed him and set off a change of Labour Leadership before the General Election.

The Labour Party has very little ‘talent’ available as the current Leadership Election demonstrates only too clearly (a bit like a Muppet Show), they really couldn’t afford to lose people like Hutton who stood down at the last election.

A Labour Future ?

The oddest thing about Labour going into Opposition is the complete absence of Gordon Brown, this “Political Colossus” as he was often called has disappeared from from the face of British politics. That he would continue on the backbenches as an MP is rather like a Lottery Winner swearing to carry on with his job as a Dustman, is likely a load of bullshit as well as not terribly practical. It reminds me of a description of “Fame”: Stick your hand in a bucket of water, swish it all around and then remove your hand. Once the water has settled again, no one knows that your hand was even there.

It was amusing to see Harriet Harmon as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, standing in in the debate on the Queen’s Speech. Obviously the Labour Party is still in some disarray following its defeat and a prolonged Leadership Contest which will drag on for 4 months, just won’t help too much either. Also set against the background of David Cameron positively glowing and growing in the role of Prime Minister.

How Good is Cameron ?

Well it is Sunday and yet another interesting article in the Independent by John Rentoul: http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/john-rentoul/john-rentoul-the-gents-definitely-for-turning-1980437.html

John’s article is worth a read. John Rentoul is ‘known’ as a Tony Blair fan and his insights into David Cameron, originally aired as the “Heir to Blair” are quite interesting because overall, his view is favourable but he does not see him as any kind of Blair clone at all.

Interesting Times for Our Coalition

The other day, David Cameron and Nick Clegg presented their 34 page detailed document to outline the details of the Coalition agreement. The general consensus was that the Conservatives had given more ground than the LibDems on their Election Manifestos. An interesting observation but not one I suspect will stand the test of time.

The one thing I’ve always liked about Cameron and despite the odd stumble since he became Tory Leader and had to ‘learn on the job’, is it became clear that he was a pragmatist not a dogmatist and one suspects, as others have commented, he has used the coalition as an excuse to ‘off-load’ a number of Tory Policies that frankly wouldn’t play well in these straightened times.

New Hope

Matthew Parris a former Conservative MP and not known as someone with a particularly soft heart wrote a very upbeat piece on the Times about the new Coalition Government having sat in the Garden of Downing Street to see the fist joint news conference given by David Cameron as PM and Nick Clegg as his Deputy.

“The political earthquake in the rose garden. It almost felt as if a divine hand was at work, bringing together two men to blow away years of staleness.” http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/matthew_parris/article7124533.ece

Sulky Child

The Independent apparently has an “Eeyore” writing Editorials for them and today in greeting the Conservative and Liberal Democratic Coalition Government, it was something like a Funeral dirge

http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/leading-articles/leading-article-an-unlikely-partnership-that-could-mark-the-start-of-a-treacherous-era-1971193.html

I don’t know who writes these Editorials but whoever it is, really ought to grow up rather than writing this childish, begrudging type of stuff, it is truly pathetic. It would seem that the LibDems having a foothold in Government is fine but not that it is with the Conservatives, total nuts
