Who Will Win ?
For all the fuss, I suspect that the outcome of the General Election will still be a Cameron Government, the situation is rather more like the vote in Northern Ireland yesterday over Policing and Justice. For all the fuss made by the Unionists, interventions by George Bush and so forth, the vote got a substantial majority as it had to.
Sure there are doubts, quite serious ones: For Sinn Fein, they needed Policing and Justice to be “local” to undermine the “British Rule” slur put out by dissident Republicans to justify illegal behaviour. The Unionists understood that but doubted whether it would undermine the ‘die-hard’ elements… but really there was little choice in the matter, for good or ill, it was an inevitable step forward albeit it, into the darkness.
More Ashcroft Crap from the Indy
I know that the Independent along with most papers in ‘Fleet Street’ is suffering financial problems since the “paid for by advertising” business model they all relied upon collapsed and to be honest, is not likely to return in the future but, that is no excuse to continue being stupid.
Although it is really a bit of a dead duck, in their main editorial today, Sunday, they return to the Lord Ashcroft story again. The last time they did this, some 90% of the people who wrote in dismissed the story as just Labour Party election campaigning and so on.
Good Journalism

I must admit to becoming a fan of one of the regular Independent columnists John Rentoul because although I think his natural instincts are likely left wing, his approach is very broad and he examines issues without bias and lots of common sense.
Today he was writing on the narrowing of the polls between Labour and the Conservatives, well worth a read: http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/john-rentoul/john-rentoul-policies-smash-personalities-1912985.html
And another one but if one is crystal ball gazing, well worth a read: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/comment/hamish-mcrae/hamish-mcrae-convention-says-voters-like-big-spending-governmentsits-wrong-1912836.html
Indy Editorial Does Loony Tunes
Sometimes it might be better not to write some Editorials and a prime example was this one in the Independent today on Lord Ashcroft funding and directing the Tory campaign in over 100 key marginal seats. http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/leading-articles/leading-article-how-money-can-distort–the-democratic-process-1912359.html
The whole Lord Ashcroft thing is rather boring in the sense that the Law bans foreign nationals from funding British Politics for obvious reasons but a British national who arranges his affairs to minimise tax is hardly the same case. Also one might question the Labour Party’s acceptance of the support of Rupert Murdoch and the Sun Newspaper, he is now an American citizen and before that, Australian. Some people do not only write total crap, they obviously think it too.
Brown on TV
On Sunday we shall see Gordon Brown on the Piers Morgan on ITV Show, talking emotionally about the death of his daughter, Jennifer.
The Times in an Editorial has lambasted him for this and for their reasons follow this link: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/leading_article/article7024184.ece
Time For Country Before Party
The loss yesterday of the US Senate Seat held by Edward Kennedy for almost 50 years to the Republican Scott Brown is seen as a blow to the Obama Presidency on his first anniversary of becoming President. This can be seen as a great snub to his plans for Health Care Reform and so on but in a sense, this is an inevitable step along the way.
Rather like the marriage of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer all those years ago, the “expectations” of an Obama Presidency – “Yes We Can.” far exceeded any reality on delivery in a recession. In this though lies some serious food for thought for David Cameron and his Team as they prepare for Government…
Labour Still in Contention ?
Although obviously a Labour supporter, a regular contributor to the Independent is John Rentoul who often writes very interesting articles that concentrate on trying to analyse the issues rather than trotting out left wing propaganda, he is always worth reading.
His article in Sunday’s edition is very well worth a read: “How many years out in the cold?” Sub heading; “Labour is likely to lose the general election. Its main concern now is damage limitation “ http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/john-rentoul/john-rentoul-how-many-years-out-in-the-cold-1870275.html
Mood and Themes Only
I was moderately amused by an editorial in today’s Independent which basically called for David Cameron to spell out all his policies and how he was going to achieve his goals. It struck me as a very silly idea as the man is not in a position to know just how bad things are and will not until he gets to Downing Street.
If we add in the fact that despite the scale of the financial crisis that has hit this Country, it was only a couple of days ago that the Labour Chancellor Darling, said openly that following the election, massive cuts in public spending will be required.
Total Nonsense
There is a regular columnist in the Independent called John Rentoul who is a serious Labour Party supporter and often writes some interesting articles however today, I thought that whilst he raised some good points he also wrote some really daft stuff.
In simple terms he was advocating that the Labour Party removed Brown before the General Election to improve their prospects but anyway, looked towards a Plan B about the Leadership post an election defeat. Worth a read to hence the link: http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/john-rentoul/john-rentoul-i-know-a-man-who-can-keep-the-new-labour-flame-burning-1858850.html
What Kind of Election ?
That the starting gun has started for the General Election is clear as is the fact that Gordon brown being the cowardly wimp he is, won’t call it until May, we are therefore in for the most boring 5 months imaginable.
It is all a total waste of time because the result must surely be inevitable, Brown out of Downing Street and out of British politics altogether, David Cameron the next Prime Minister and following that, a surge of self confidence that could get the economy floating again. Still we are forced to wait and therefore an amusing little story someone sent me today in an email, it should make you smile…
