Day Eight of the Election Campaign
An interesting article in the Independent by Dominic Lawson today that is worth a read because like a previous article by John Rentoul, it is pointing towards the public being fundamentally dishonest with themselves over “politicians telling the truth” – the public just don’t want to hear it, the truth.
Day Seven of the Election Campaign
The Election Campaign limps into its second week and Lord what a yawn it is turning out to be. Today Labour will launch their “Election Manifesto” which will be a bit of a hoot because they have already had 13 years to sort things out under benign economic circumstances and only managed to cock everything up, so now they have “Seen the light ” and wish to be re-elected ? I hardly think so !
The other two will launch their ‘Manifestos’ too but frankly and under the current economic circumstances, these also will be pious hopes rather than specific promises and all that can be expected. The Media will get themselves up in a lather about the first “Leaders TV Debate” this Thursday which I suspect will turn out to be a non event if not just a real yawn.
Day Six of the Election Campaign
Well it is Sunday and to brighten my day, yet another highly intelligent article written by my erudite Left Wing ‘friend’, John Rentoul. I like this chap just as back in the 1980s, I loved reading Brian Waldren a former Labour MP who published in the London Evening Standard every Tuesday during ‘Maggie’s Years’.
In both cases, none of the ‘histrionics’ based upon their personal political beliefs, just straight forward and clear eyed analysis and comment based upon “what is today”. http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/john-rentoul/john-rentoul-cameron-is-cheeky-but-right-1941241.html
Day Five of the Election Campaign
The Times seems to be sucking a fart out of Brown’s arse these days, Lord knows why except one suspects that the “Sun” having come out for the Tories, Murdoch thinks it ‘politic’ to have one of his titles backing Brown just in case he wins, on such cynicism is Murdoch’s reputation built.
The question is; “What would happen if Brown actually won ?” Whilst a totally horrible thought, there would be some serious implications for both the Nation and the Labour Party.
Day Three of the Election Campaign
I read yesterday that likely this will be the most “polled” General Election of all time with up to 70 more being done between now and May 6th, however the author suggested that they will have no impact on the outcome and the results will mainly only serve to confuse further.
In many ways it already seems like a very odd election and my gut feeling is that the more the Media tries to ‘hype it up’, the more bored people will become with it. Over the “MPs Expenses Scandal”, the common wisdom was that MPs were out of touch with the public, by the same token, I think the Media are generally out of touch with their customers.
Day Two of the Election Campaign
It got off to a good start in the Times with the Peter Brooks cartoon of Brown firing the starting pistol at his own head: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/cartoon/ Peter Brooks
One of my favourite journalists in John Rentoul was on top form too with a very good article in the Independent: http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/john-rentoul/john-rentoul-ill-put-a-wager-on-a-tory-victory-despite-the-known-unknowns-1937450.html
Day One of the Election Campaign
Well we are now off and running thank Heavens but I have to say based upon first impressions, we are in for a pretty dire 4 weeks of total bollocks.
We know who the politicians are and to be honest, I suspect that the decision was already made last year, Brown out and Cameron in. A quick scan of the on-line press this evening just about sums it all up – total crap and already the impression that 4 weeks may just be far too long by 27 days, I’m feeling tired already and I’m interested in politics !
And So Finally… A General Election
Gordon Brown is apparently calling the General Election after the customary visit to the Queen to request a Dissolution of the current Parliament and all I can say is about time too ! We should have had this election in the Autumn (Fall), of last year.
The Media expects it to be a “tight run thing”, with David Cameron’s best hope being a very slim overall majority and the likelihood of a “Hung Parliament” where no Party has an overall majority. I am not so sure and whilst we have a whole host of “newish” variables at play, the consensus is that the least likely outcome is 5 more years of “Bottler Brown” who if he hadn’t been such a coward, would have called an Election in Autumn 2007 and today still have 3 years left to run because he would have won it, then.
The Budget 2010 and the Next Election
I am a fan of John Rentoul who writes in the Independent today, another highly intelligent well written article which is a pleasure to read about David Cameron and the upcoming election. http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/john-rentoul/john-rentoul-dave-has-always-been-a-good-finisher-1929217.html
One of his points is that the poll swings against the Tories are based upon the average punter thinking: “Government Debt = unreal, means nothing to me. Increased Taxes = The Tories will increase taxes so real, to me”. I think that is probably right, the British public have become increasingly infantile under Labour and their profligate financial policies.
Brilliant Writing
Being a journalist and having to churn out ‘regular stuff’ to deadlines must be tough but occasionally and the following is a fine example by Matthew Norman in the ‘Indy’, great stuff, brilliant use of language and more than well worth a read: http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/matthew-norman/matthew-norman-theres-a-charming-symmetry-to-the-latest-new-labour-scandal-1925992.html – enjoy !
