Labour Leader or Labour Liability ?
On John Rentoul’s blog, he includes a couple of BBC video clips which are quite interesting. Essentially his view is that a Labour Party led by Ed Miliband will not get elected and frankly, I totally agree with him and it is not being “Anti-Labour” to say so.
Amusingly, the BBC sent him to an “Ed’s Diner”, a wonderful retro American style burger bar, to film a piece, great fun ! http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2011/01/17/order-to-go-at-eds-diner/ However and although easy to joke about, when we look at the Labour Party today, we are looking at a whole lost generation of Labour politicians.
Playing the Numbers: You Must be Joking !
I wrote yesterday about my view of the expected outcome from the Oldham and Saddleworth by-election and even allowing for the pathetic fumblings of the Media, I was surprised by the torrent of mindless crap that flowed from the result.
Firstly, it makes no difference because it was always a Labour safe seat that only came under any threat because of the mood of the Country in May 2010 which was one of realisation that we could no longer tolerate a Labour Government under the leadership of Gordon Brown. There was neither victory nor any serious ‘judgement’ in this result, all one can say is that if Labour had lost the seat, it would have been a ‘story’, that they didn’t amounts to a ‘No News’ story.
The Popularity or Lack of and the LibDems
With today’s by-election in Oldham East and Saddleworth a safe Labour seat, the media is obviously giving some attention and for once, the Independent : http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/leading-articles/leading-article-what-is-and-isnt-at-stake-in-oldham-east-2182988.html totally trumps the rather nonsense piece by Benedict Brogan in the Telegraph : http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/benedictbrogan/100071712/oldham-by-election-we-will-find-out-whether-the-coalition-looks-old-and-sad/
The problem is that the newspapers feel, quite rightly, that they must comment and try and ‘dramatise’ every twist and turn that they can whilst a rather more sophisticated electorate has other things on their mind, the economy and how bad it will all be, the current political dynamics are accepted for the time being, all political journalists are looking rather stale.
End of Year Mistakes
Although I am sure, much to the chagrin of many ‘Independent Readers’, John Rentoul who is now clearly back in form with a wonderful column on his immediate future projections which, is well worth the read:
There was one particular bit about a school book scheme that no one had heard of but the lacklustre Ed Miliband decided to wade in on which was totally silly even if, being an essential part of being Ed the Muppet Millipede.
How to Lose the Argument
There will no doubt be many recriminations flying around over the next few days and whilst the Sunday Tabloids will focus on the winner of the “X Factor”, the Sunday broadsheets will grind on relentlessly about how the Police mishandled the “Student Demonstration” and the needless exposure of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to a break away group of protesters, there is only one reality:
Absolutely no one walks away from these events with clean hands and the attack on the Royal Couple was one sure fire way by which those students present, totally lost the argument…
MPs Expenses Again ? OMG !
Working wholly on the Class System which all UK Journalists “Deplore” apparently, we have the ‘Broadsheets’ and the ‘Red Tops’. Whilst the ownership of these may be common and journalists totally inter-changeable for career advancement, these are ‘marketing distinctions’ designed for us ‘Prols’ who are thought to be too stupid to notice.
To be fair to these ‘Media Marketing Machines’, they are not far wrong because we tend to be stupid enough to put ourselves in the ‘box’ they have designated for us through our own petty prejudices and like sheep in a pen, once separated from the rest, can be ‘dealt with, sold to’, as desired and along pre-determined lines…
Anatomy of a “Comments” Argument
I have at times of boredom or weakness, engaged in ‘comments wars’, they can get quite grisly because hiding behind some anonymous name, people can feel quite free to be totally silly and downright insulting so normally I ignore them but the following mild example may provide some amusement.
One of the staff writers on The Daily Telegraph is Janet Daley who I rarely read because like Simon Heffer who also writes for the DT, she is none too bright and her right wing fan club that comment on her articles are pretty unhinged at the best of times however, today it was worth a crack: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/janetdaley/8165185/Why-dont-we-love-David-Cameron.html#dsq-content
The Aftermath of Lord Young
There was an interesting Editorial in the Independent today and whilst not agreeing with what Lord Young said, raised an important point and I quote:
“If politicians are to be pressured out of their jobs whenever they step fractionally off-message, they will only ever speak guardedly and the hand of the party managements will be strengthened. We risk creating a stifled political atmosphere in which our representatives speak only in pre-approved sound-bites and telling the truth becomes a gaffe.” http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/leading-articles/leading-article-keep-political-speech-free-2139094.html
Pompous Crap
For an example of the most self indulgent pompous crap that Fleet Street is capable of, it would be hard to top this example by Peter Oborne in today’s Daily Telegraph complete with over 300 reader’s comments no doubt mainly saying “here, here old chap, jolly good and quite right..” The Telegraph’s by line for him is “Peter Oborne is the Daily Telegraph’s chief political commentator” and I agree, one could not illustrate what is wrong with the DT better than by explaining how low the current ‘standard is’:
The DT’s average core reader has no more spark of intelligence than the average from the Guardian and Independent, they are mainly all totally dull. But let me deal with my objections which are not concerned with Oborne’s allegation that our Parliament is rotten to the core, it may or may not be but if so, he is not offering any sensible remedies or solutions, he is just having a journalistic wank at our and his employer’s expense.
The American Mid-Terms
Yesterday we had the US Mid-Term elections for Congress and State Governorships which this morning and as expected has led to the Democrats losing control of the House of Representatives but retaining control of the Senate. In the run up to these elections it was obvious that the Obama Administration was due for a bit of a ‘kicking’.
The funny thing is looking at the responses from the Right Wing in this country as if it proves anything but then I suspect, people will always seize upon other’s agendas as ‘proof’ of their own cause albeit that things are rather different.
